Position Summary
The purpose of the IT Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) Department is to ensure the security, availability, and performance of technology infrastructure to assist NYSTRS in performing its mission to provide our members a secure pension. This includes the technical infrastructure used by the System in its Albany and Business Continuity locations including, but not limited to, management of basic information technology services, virtual server infrastructure maintenance and provisioning, network storage planning and provisioning, backup and recovery, email administration, network maintenance and planning, video and telecommunications infrastructure maintenance, and database maintenance and design services. Additionally, all customer support and security administration functions are performed in this department including, but not limited to, IT service management, IT asset management, desktop management, operations and job scheduling, mobile device and audio-visual support, and security management services for the organization.
The Information Technology Intern position is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain hands-on experience and develop solid IT skills by working on varied projects throughout the IT I&O Department. This position is located at NYSTRS headquarters at 10 Corporate Woods Drive in Albany, NY.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s or master’s degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, business information systems, computer information systems, or closely related major with at least one semester remaining to complete all degree requirements following the internship and must be a rising junior, rising senior, or graduate student by Summer 2027.
Preferred Qualifications
- Foundational knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, and basic troubleshooting
- Familiarity with networking concepts (IP addressing, VLANs, firewalls) or interest in learning them
- Exposure to cybersecurity principles, security tools, or coursework
- Strong communication skills and eagerness to support end users professionally
- Ability to learn quickly, follow procedures, and work collaboratively within an IT team
- Strong problem-solving abilities with the ability to use sound judgment
Work Modality
Currently we have a hybrid work schedule which may be subject to change in the future.
Job Duties
The IT Security and Service Desk Intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
- Assist users with basic hardware, software, and account-access issues
- Set up and configure workstations, peripherals, and standard applications
- Help document troubleshooting steps and update internal knowledge articles
- Monitor security alerts dashboards and help identify basic suspicious activity
- Assist with vulnerability scans, log reviews, and security tool updates
- Help prepare simple security awareness materials or assist in incident documentation
- Other IT projects as relevant
