About Us
Mercantile Accounting is a London-based accounting and advisory firm. We work with high-growth tech firms in the UK, handling their accounting, compliance and finance function work so they can focus on building their businesses. We’re a lean and tech-enabled firm helping startups scale with financial clarity and access investment opportunities.
The Role
We’re looking for a Junior Accountant to join our remote team. You’ll support our senior accountants with day-to-day client work while building practical UK accounting experience under the guidance of a chartered accountant. We’re also looking for someone with high agency and curiousity, and has a keen interest in AI tools and automation, which you’ll have room to apply here.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, data entry and bank reconciliations
- Preparing management reports and supporting year-end accounts, VAT returns and tax workings
- Working in Xero and Excel or Google Sheets on a range of client files
- Responding to client queries and keeping client records up to date
- Using AI tools to speed up reviews, reconciliations and reporting
- Helping us build and document small automations and spreadsheet tools that remove manual work
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Working in, or studying towards, an accounting qualification (e.g. BCom Accounting, SAICA/SAIPA/ACCA/CIMA trainee or part-qualified), or experience as a professional accountant or bookkeeper
- Solid grasp of accounting fundamentals
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written English and good communication skills
- Proficiency in Excel
- Ability to work independently and reliably in a remote environment
Advantageous
- Experience with Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent
- Interest in AI and automation, or the ability to code (Python, SQL, Apps Script, or AI-assisted coding). You don’t need to be a developer, but you should be keen to learn
- Exposure to UK accounting, VAT or corporate tax
- Experience with SMEs
