Junior Engineer — Backend

Founded in Dubai in 2018, we operate across the city and support customers around the clock. The role As a Backend Engineer, you will be involved in developing and maintaining our backend systems. Our backend platform streamlines our rental operations, powers our applications, and orchestrates third-party integrations. Your code makes operations personnel work efficiently and accurately. Our backend is at the heart of our business operations; we want it to be responsive, extensible, and stable. Working with us entails: API-first development — the contract is designed and agreed before the implementation follows. Building APIs using Spring Boot that developers love: documentation-first, HATEOAS, comprehensive unit testing, and end-to-end testing with Karate. Maintaining complex systems that require strong Domain-Driven Design and Clean Code practices. Agentic coding — we work with AI coding agents daily, and you stay accountable for everything that ships under your name. Integrating third-party services — payments, messaging, emails — into our rental and booking flows. Working with PostgreSQL: writing and reviewing queries, understanding indexes, keeping migrations safe. Investigating production issues with senior engineers, from logs and traces through to root cause. Taking part in code review and pairing with senior engineers. What we are looking for 0–2 years of professional experience, or a solid portfolio of personal, open-source or academic projects. Working knowledge of Java or Kotlin and comfort with object-oriented design. Familiarity with Spring Boot, or another web framework plus the appetite to pick up Spring quickly. An understanding of HTTP, REST and JSON — and an interest in what makes an API good to use. Basic SQL and an understanding of relational data modelling. A testing habit: you write tests because you want to know your code works, not because someone asked. Comfortable with Git and a branch-and-pull-request workflow. Curiosity about Domain-Driven Design and Clean Code — you do not need to have practised them yet. Nice to have Reactive programming style. Knowledge of OAuth2. API documentation using OpenAPI (Swagger). Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes. Any experience with marketplace, booking or payment systems. As a remote-first company, we are looking for someone who can work effectively in a remote environment and has good written English communication skills. If your English language skills are great, this would boost your position in the company. We assume that candidates have the necessary hardware, fast internet, and stable power for remote work. We understand that individual needs may vary, and we will do our best to provide for additional needs on a case-by-case basis. Practicalities Full-time, permanent, remote work setup. Your working day should follow UAE hours (GST, UTC+4). Reports to the Backend Lead, with a named senior engineer responsible for your ramp-up.
