Junior Geologist

Role Overview

Reporting to the Geology Manager, this role is part of the Geoscience team accountable for the technical mapping, data management, and analysis that underpins Rubellite’s heavy oil development and capital programs.

Working across Rubellite’s WCSB heavy oil and Clearwater assets, the successful candidate will support senior geologists and engineers from initial play evaluation through well execution and post-drill review, assisting with stratigraphic correlation, database management, regulatory documentation, and drilling operations support. The role combines technical development, exposure to multidisciplinary teams, and a mindset for continuous learning to build a strong foundation in operations geology.

Success Profile

This role is well suited to an individual who is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and motivated to build a career in oil and gas geology within a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment. Success in this position includes taking initiative and accountability when solving problems, tracking and executing on a variety of technical deliverables, and maintaining strong lines of communication across departments as the candidate grows into broader area responsibilities under the mentorship of experienced geologists.

Specific initiatives include:

  • Support stratigraphic correlation and mapping across core heavy oil operating areas.
  • Assist in building and maintaining geological, waterflood analogue, and offset operator databases.
  • Support drilling program planning and execution, including regulatory submissions and directional survey tracking.
  • Contribute to new play scoping and acquisition & divestiture (A&D) technical evaluations.
  • Assist with production allocation calculations and continuation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications.
  • Support the integration of legacy well data and AI-assisted tools into corporate geological platforms.
  • Build strong working relationships across Engineering, Land, Operations, and Regulatory teams.
  • Progressively take on greater ownership of technical deliverables and, over time, an
    assigned operating area.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Geological Mapping & Correlation

  • Perform stratigraphic correlation and mapping across core operating areas, including
    complex clastics geology and carbonates.
  • Generate net and gross pay, porosity, permeability, and water saturation maps to support
    development planning.
  • Provide ranged input for Monte Carlo simulation and play risking matrix analysis.
  • Support single and multi-lateral development plan design, including waterflood pattern implementation.

Database & Technical Support

  • Build and maintain geological databases, compiling log, core, cuttings, and other technical
    data into searchable systems.
  • Maintain and expand the waterflood analogue database, mapping and extracting parameters for multi-lateral waterflood patterns.
  • Track offset operator activity across areas of interest to support analogue selection and project optimization.
  • Support integration of legacy well data and AI-assisted analytical tools into corporate geological platforms.

Drilling Operations Support

  • Build coordinate files and geological prognoses to support drilling program planning and execution, including building wellsite packages and request-to-drill documentation.
  • Provide on-call geological supervision for drilling operations, including designing and monitoring horizontal targets and reservoir quality while drilling.
  • Coordinate with area managers, drilling, and completions teams to support optimal well placement and monitor production results.

Regulatory & Administrative Support

  • Prepare regulatory submissions for mineral continuation applications
  • Collect data for and draft continuation applications and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) scheme applications (e.g., D51, D56).
  • Measure and calculate ratios supporting Production Allocation Agreements.

Asset Development & Collaboration

  • Support new play scoping and rapid technical assessment of acquisition and divestiture (A&D) opportunities.
  • Partner with Land, Engineering, and Operations to evaluate development and waterflood opportunities.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams and external consultants supporting geological data initiatives.

Professional Development & Competencies

  • Strong foundational knowledge of stratigraphic correlation, play criteria, and geological mapping techniques.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent technical tasks.
  • Effective communicator able to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and balance competing priorities.
  • Self-motivated with the initiative to identify process improvements and take ownership of assigned deliverables.
  • Adaptable and eager to learn, with a genuine interest in operations geology and heavy oil development.
  • Willingness to progressively take on greater responsibility, including area geologist duties, as experience grows.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related Geoscience discipline.
  • APEGA registration as a Member-in-Training (M.I.T.), P.Geo., or P.Eng.
  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in oil and gas geology, geologic engineering, or related field or Master’s degree with co-op or internship with a hydrocarbon E&P company
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment across multiple business groups.
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly to changing priorities while meeting deliverable timelines.
  • Proficiency with GeoSCOUT, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint; exposure to AI-assisted workflows considered an asset.
  • Foundational experience or coursework in stratigraphic correlation, oil and gas play analysis, geological mapping techniques, and core interpretation and analysis.
