Junior Product Engineer

European Air-Cooled Chiller Engineering | Dublin, Ireland



What you will do


Johnson Controls has an exciting Product Engineer I opportunity based at our Dublin, Ireland location, supporting our new European air-cooled chiller engineering organization. If you are beginning your engineering career and enjoy mechanical design, hands-on testing, and data analysis, this could be the right position for you.

In this entry-level role you will support the mechanical design and performance of air-cooled chiller components engineered for the European market, working under close supervision to complete design work as part of a project team. You will build your knowledge of our products, support laboratory testing and factory activity, and contribute to new and exciting product development programs while developing your technical expertise.



How you will do it


  • Builds an understanding of the theories, concepts, technical principles, and processes related to the fluid, thermal, refrigeration, and other mechanical aspects of air-cooled chillers
  • Works under close supervision, following work instructions and defined processes, and takes direction from more experienced engineers
  • Follows the project plan and participates in design activities with other team members
  • Supports delivery of engineering deliverables, including design specifications, design reviews, data analysis, etc.
  • Learns and applies European mechanical and safety codes and directives, including CE marking, the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), and the Machinery Directive, and harmonized standards such as EN 378 (refrigerating systems safety) and EN 14511 (chiller performance rating)
  • Supports the build, instrumentation, and running of laboratory test programs; collects, reduces, and presents test data under guidance
  • Assists with the selection of mechanical components – including heat exchangers, fans, valves, and refrigerant piping – considering cost, performance, and availability
  • Provides day-to-day support to factory operations, the laboratory, and product technical service on assigned components
  • Supports the sustaining of released product, including gathering information to support design changes
  • Communicates with project team members and reports progress on assigned tasks
  • Applies standard technical and mathematical principles, theories, concepts, and best-practice methodologies in the field
  • Continuously increases expertise across chiller design, theory, construction, operation, and applications; participates in process improvement
  • Adheres to the Company’s Code of Conduct and Business Ethics standards

What we look for


Required


  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline / science
  • Entry level; previous internship, co-op, or work experience in a related field preferred
  • Understanding of fundamental fluid and thermal principles
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD and engineering drawing practice
  • Willingness to learn and apply European mechanical and refrigeration codes and standards (CE marking, PED, Machinery Directive, EN 378)
  • Able to organize and process large amounts of data
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, schedule-driven, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, primarily within Europe

Preferred

  • Internship, co-op, or placement experience in HVAC, refrigeration, or another industrial product environment
  • Exposure to laboratory testing, instrumentation, and data acquisition
  • Familiarity with refrigeration systems and the EU F-Gas Regulation
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems and motor-driven mechanical engineering design and test
  • Exposure to structural, thermal, or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis
  • Experience with ERP / material resource planning (MRP) software
  • Familiarity with European regulatory standards such as EN 378, EN 14511, and the Ecodesign / ErP framework
