About the role: We are seeking an experienced team member to support the delivery of independent kitchen extract system inspections in accordance with the TR19® Grease Standard (Specification for Fire Risk Management of Grease Accumulation within Kitchen Extraction Systems).
Bureau Veritas operates independently and does not undertake duct cleaning or remedial works. Our role is to inspect commercial kitchen extract systems, from the canopy through to the final discharge point, on behalf of landlords and property owners to assess compliance with TR19® Grease requirements.
Currently, we undertake inspections across more than 150 commercial kitchen outlets throughout London on a routine quarterly basis.
Role Overview
Inspections are typically undertaken outside normal restaurant operating hours and generally take place between:
· 18:00 and 03:00
· Early morning starts, where required
· Occasional weekend working
Inspection reports are generally completed and issued to clients by the next working day.
This is a hybrid role offering a varied working pattern. Typically, the successful candidate will undertake approximately:
· 2 to 3 nights per week carrying out site inspections
· 2 days per week preparing reports and undertaking associated administrative duties
Working hours will vary depending on operational requirements, and some weeks may include additional early morning or standard daytime working.
All client liaison, site access arrangements and permit requirements are coordinated by Bureau Veritas, and our clients are well established and familiar with the inspection process.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake independent TR19® Grease inspections of commercial kitchen extract systems.
- Assess system condition, cleanliness and compliance with industry standards.
- Record findings accurately and prepare comprehensive inspection reports.
- Obtain access, maintenance records and supporting documentation from site representatives.
- Liaise professionally with tenants, facilities teams and client representatives.
- Submit completed reports within agreed timescales.
Essential Knowledge and Experience
A sound understanding of the TR19® Grease Standard and commercial kitchen extract systems is required, including knowledge of:
- Canopy grease filters and grease separators
- Sound attenuators
- Turning vanes and changes in airflow direction
- Extract fan systems
- Grease Thickness Test (GTT) measurements
- Ultraviolet (UV) filtration systems
- Water-wash canopy systems
- Carbon filtration systems
- Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP)
- Fire suppression systems
- Ecology units
- Planned preventative maintenance and cleaning regimes
Qualifications
Candidates should ideally hold one of the following qualifications:
- BESA Grease Hygiene Technician (GHT)
- BESA Grease Hygiene Operative (GHO)
- Equivalent experience within the kitchen extract ventilation industry will also be considered.
Skills and Attributes
- Demonstrable experience working with commercial kitchen extract systems.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative to obtain site access and relevant maintenance records.
- Strong attention to detail and report-writing skills.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Comfortable working flexible and unsocial hours, with work schedules planned in advance wherever possible.
- Willingness to undertake regular night working, typically 2-3 nights per week.
- Ability to work from home when preparing and submitting inspection reports.
