Laboratory Automation Engineer (all genders) - Pharmaceutical Developement

As a Laboratory Automation Engineer (all genders) - Pharmaceutical Development, you act as a technical driver and implementation partner for laboratory automation initiatives across Pharmaceutical Development. You identify, design, implement and scale automation solutions that support scientists and laboratories in daily operations while contributing to Bayer’s long-term automation and AI transformation strategy.

Working closely with scientists, digital experts, automation vendors, engineers, data scientists and IT partners, you convert business needs into practical automation solutions and support the establishment of reusable automation platforms.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • You design, implement and maintain laboratory automation solutions that improve efficiency, throughput and data quality
  • You develop and optimize automated laboratory workflows, including robotics, liquid handling, analytical automation and sample preparation systems
  • Integrating laboratory instruments, automation platforms and digital systems to create connected and data-enabled laboratory environments is part of your responsbility
  • You lead or support automation projects from concept through deployment, including vendor management, qualification, validation and operational handover
  • Collaborating closely with scientists, engineers, digital experts, data scientists, IT partners and external suppliers to deliver practical automation solutions is part of your function
  • You provide technical support, troubleshooting, user training and continuous improvement activities to ensure sustainable operation of deployed systems
  • You evaluate emerging automation technologies and identify opportunities to scale innovative solutions
  • Due to the hands-on nature of laboratory automation, equipment integration, laboratory support and stakeholder engagement, your on-site presence at the designated Bayer location is required (>60%); occasional travel or (hybrid) execution of projects at other Bayer sites may be required (~10-20%)

WHO YOU ARE

  • You hold a Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent in automation engineering, robotics, mechatronics, biotechnology, chemical engineering, computer science, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related discipline
  • You have gained substantial hands-on experience in laboratory automation, industrial automation, robotics, system integration, ideally within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences industry
  • You have practical experience in laboratory automation, industrial automation, robotics or system integration, ideally within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or life sciences industry
  • You possess strong technical knowledge of automation systems, laboratory equipment and digital integration technologies such as OPC-UA, APIs, instrument control software and industrial communication interfaces
  • You are familiar with programming, scripting and data-driven workflows, ideally including Python and automation-related software tools
  • You have a strong interest in emerging technologies such as AI-enabled laboratory workflows, digital twins, autonomous laboratories, high-throughput automation or closed-loop experimentation
  • You are a hands-on problem solver who enjoys working directly with laboratory equipment, stakeholders and multidisciplinary project teams
  • You thrive in collaborative environments where technical expertise, initiative and customer focus are essential for success.
  • Fluent German and English language skills, both written and spoken, round off your profile
