About the company

Our client is a law firm.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Provide legal counsel on how municipal zoning regulations affect real estate sites and guide projects through governmental review. The work blends regulatory analysis, property rights transactions and permit-style filings, in close coordination with deal-focused colleagues.

What you'll do

- Review the zoning profile of properties being bought or financed and produce written memoranda on what can be built.

- Counsel clients on transactions involving transferable development rights and related zoning agreements.

- Prepare and oversee applications for discretionary governmental approvals, such as variances, special permits, preservation and environmental reviews.

- Liaise with design professionals, consultants, local community bodies and public officials as projects move through public review.

- Partner with the firm's transactional lawyers on property acquisitions and development matters.

- Act as counsel to a range of property-side clients, including builders, owners, institutions and investors.

What we're looking for

- At least 3 years of experience interpreting and applying New York City zoning rules, gained in private practice, government, or both.

- Practical background in site-level zoning review, written analyses or land use filings.

- Admission to the New York Bar.

- Zoning experience located in New York City; work elsewhere alone is not sufficient.

- A steady employment history with meaningful tenure at previous employers.

- A background advising owner and landlord-side clients rather than tenants.

- Strong academic credentials.

- Residence in New York City and ability to work a hybrid schedule with fixed office days.

- Openness to sharing the status of any other hiring processes you are in.

Bonus points

- Familiarity with proceedings before the state rent regulation agency.

- Experience on property-side matters such as assemblages, tenant buyouts, vacating of buildings or demolitions.

- Knowledge of New York rent stabilization law.

- Experience at a respected landlord-side real estate practice.

- Earlier work in the real estate industry before or during law school.

- A portable client base for consideration at a senior partnership level.

Compensation and benefits

- Base salary: USD 250,000 to 275,000 per year

Location and work model

- New York City, NY, United States

- Hybrid, 3 days per week in office

- Full-time
