Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit is growing! A well-established and leading law firm specializing in the representation of homeowner, condominium, and community associations is seeking a part-time Law Clerk for our Chicago, IL office. This busy, non-exempt position requires diplomatic people skills and is ideal for a 2L or 3L attending law school who needs part-time work, approximately 25 hours per week.


The starting hourly rate for this role is $25.00 per hour, dependent on experience. This position is fully in-office and does not offer a hybrid work option. The work schedule will be confirmed with the Human Resources Manager and/or department manager at the time of hire. This position plays a vital role by providing coverage for the Front Desk Clerk when they are out of the office.

Responsibilities:

· Support attorneys with legal inquiries, research, and preparation of legal memoranda while meeting established deadlines.

· File pleadings in Cook County and federal courts, as well as tax appeals.

· Prepare and set up motions.

· Record legal documents with the Recorder’s Office, including deeds, amendments, and declarations.

· Obtain copies of documents and records from city, county, state, and federal agencies.

· Deliver courtesy copies to judges and documents to attorneys in court.

· Record time and expenses daily for billing purposes.

· Conduct various searches as requested, including property tax, Social Security number, license plate, PACER bankruptcy, and active military searches, and update applicable firm systems accordingly.

· Provide backup support to the Front Desk Clerk during absences to ensure timely completion and delivery of court filings and document retrievals.

· Scan and profile foreclosure notices and related correspondence into the document management system.

· Coordinate interoffice delivery of documents via messenger.

· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

· Currently attending law school – 2L or 3L.

· Completed Legal Writing Course.

· 4 Year Undergraduate Degree.

· Clerking (filing) experience with a law office, preferred.


Competencies:

· Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, with the ability to learn and effectively use specialized software.

· Possess strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

· Works independently and takes initiatives to accomplish tasks.

· Strong research and writing skills and a familiarity with Lexis or Westlaw.

· Ability to multi-task with focused attention to detail and proofreading.
