This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified lawyer with experience in energy transition and nature conservation law and policy in Southeast Asia, preferably Indonesia or the Philippines, to contribute to the work of ClientEarth’s work programmes in Japan and Southeast Asia on Resources, Energy, & Mobility (REM) and Food, Ocean, and Land Use (FOLU). The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing the low-carbon transition and conserving biodiversity in the region, leveraging their expertise in energy transition and biodiversity law, policy, and regulation. This is a remote position with an initial term of one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance, funding, and organisational need.

In this role, you will engage with partners across Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and the broader region to strengthen and accelerate the low-carbon transition, contribute to our early-stage nature strategy, and develop and maintain effective relationships across the region. You will also actively develop ClientEarth’s work on the intersection of climate and biodiversity conservation; conduct legal, technical and factual research and drafting; and present our work both internally and externally to various stakeholders.

Main duties

  • Strategy Development: Work closely with the line manager to develop and implement agreed strategic priorities in the region, providing country-level insights, identifying risks and lessons learned, and ensuring alignment with closely related regional and global strategies.
  • Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research and analysis on the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the energy transition and biodiversity conservation in the region.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders in Japan and Southeast Asia, including government agencies, industry leaders, civil society organisations, and donors.

Role requirements

  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English
  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in Bahasa Indonesia or Filipino
  • Law degree or equivalent
  • Experience in energy law, policy, and regulation
  • Experience in biodiversity conservation law, policy, and regulation
  • Knowledge of the intersection between the energy transition and nature conservation
  • Ability to engage constructively with a range of external stakeholders and represent ClientEarth confidently in various forums
