📌 Job Title: Lead Community Manager

🏢 Department: Marketing

🧭 Location: Remote (The Netherlands)

🕒 Employment Type: Volunteer, 4-8 hours per week

👤 Reports to: Rob (temporarily)

🧠 About Advocates Who Thrive

Across Europe, many people work tirelessly to advance social and environmental justice. This work is deeply meaningful but incredibly demanding. Over time, many face a heavy personal toll: losing energy, struggling to involve others, doubting themselves, or feeling entirely isolated. Far less attention often goes to supporting the actual people behind the change work: the advocates themselves.

Advocates Who Thrive is a learning & development organization dedicated to changing that. Our mission is to strengthen the resilience, confidence, and effectiveness of people who advance social and environmental justice by offering world-class coaching, group learning, and peer support. Our approach is experiential, practical, and human. We help changemakers work directly on their real-life challenges so they can stay emotionally balanced, stand strong against resistance, and communicate in ways that bring their communities along with them.

🎯 Role Overview

We are seeking a thoughtful and proactive Lead Community Manager to join our team and shape our digital community space. In this role, you will take the lead in building and activating our WhatsApp-based community, which serves as a vital low-threshold space for young advocates across the Netherlands navigating social and environmental justice projects.

You will act as the lead host of this space, creating a high-value "Brave Space" where change-makers can counter isolation, access bite-sized tools for confidence, communication, and resilience, and get a weekly mental fuel-up for the long haul. This community is a critical bridge to our deeper learning activities: it allows for far more personal interaction, real connection, and peer learning than standard social media channels. You will work closely with our social media content creator to cross-feed ideas, and as the group grows, you will guide a secondary community manager to expand our impact.

📋 Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a consistent rhythm of WhatsApp-friendly posts on a weekly basis. E.g. Tuesday "Pulse Checks" (on energy levels, establishing boundaries, etc.) and Thursday "Fuel Stations" (short quotes, hacks, or resources with an explicit "how-to-use" tip).
  • Translate insights from books, podcasts, and articles into short, punchy, jargon-free tips that advocates can easily apply in their daily lives.
  • Actively welcome new members and cultivate a safe, low-pressure culture where passive reading and "lurking" are fully accepted.
  • Foster organic peer support by responding warmly to member inputs within a few hours and actively bridging connections.
  • Ensure interactions stay aligned with community guidelines, keeping the focus on human resilience and leadership rather than political debates or self-promotion spam.
  • Track what content & formats do well and use this to improve the community space’s strategy and as input for our coaches.
🌱 Qualifications & Skills
  • Deep interest in social and environmental justice, with genuine empathy for the advocate's journey.
  • Strong affinity for community building, online facilitation, or peer learning spaces.
  • Exceptional ability to write clear, short, and engaging human messages without corporate speak.
  • Curious mindset, excellent listening skills, and a proactive drive to spark interaction.
  • Highly organized and reliable, capable of managing scheduling and coordination independently in a remote setting.

📈 Preferred (but not required)
  • Experience managing online groups (e.g., WhatsApp, Slack, Discord).
  • Experience with practical content curation or storytelling.
  • Intercultural fluency or experience working in diverse, international settings.
  • Lived experience with the activist, advocate, or changemaker communities we serve.

💼 What We Offer
  • A supportive and values-aligned team environment
  • Flexibility and autonomy
  • A platform to contribute to meaningful, global impact

🎁 Volunteer Perks

As a token of our appreciation for your dedication, we offer the following:

  • Travel Compensation: Reimbursement for travel expenses related to events or activities conducted on behalf of AWT.
  • Learning & Development: Priority access to internal coaching, training, and development opportunities — plus possible access to partner programs.
  • Monthly Community Meetings: Join us for mission-focused discussions and delicious vegan snacks & drinks with fellow team members.
  • Written Reference: Receive a personalized letter of recommendation to support your future professional or educational pursuits.

📌 What to Expect in the Recruitment Process

We believe in transparency and respect for every candidate’s time. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. CV Screening – We review your background for mission and skills alignment.
  2. One Virtual Interview (with HR & Hiring Manager) – A friendly and focused conversation about your motivation, experience, and alignment with our work.
  3. Feedback – After the process completion, we will send you an email with feedback within 7 business days..

We value every application and ensure a respectful and timely process.

✨ How to Apply

Please send your CV to:

📧 [email protected]

Kindly keep in mind that all the volunteers work on a part-time basis hence the response time can be longer than usual (up to 7 working days).
