The Lead EHS Audit Consultant will serve as a member of the Corporate Audit Services Department of Duke Energy. This position will be based in Charlotte, NC. Travel will be required up to approximately 35%. This position will report administratively to an Audit Director but will work in a matrix environment for increased career growth and diversity. The Lead EHS Audit Consultant performs as an audit in-charge and provides leadership over complex environmental, health and safety (EHS) audits and consulting engagements. They work in a team environment on various audit activities including performing audit risk assessments, development of risk-based audit scope and test plans, performing interviews and site observations, and gathering and analyzing data to draw appropriate conclusions, preparing audit deliverables to support conclusions, and communicating audit risks and issues.

Major Accountabilities include, but not limited to:

· Plan and lead large, complex programmatic and management systems audits of EHS throughout the enterprise, including oversight of the day-to-day activities of assigned audit staff personnel

· Evaluate the design and effectiveness of programs and processes, including alignment with the Duke Energy EHS Management System and regulatory requirements, with an appropriate level of professional skepticism

· Conduct interviews and site observations with stakeholders ranging from craft to senior management

· Gather and analyze data, using reasoning and logic, and draw appropriate conclusions

· Monitor and track the status of post-audit action plans and perform follow-up procedures to validate implementation and risk mitigation

· Demonstrate written and oral communication skills with ability to tailor messages for varying audiences

· Build and maintain effective relationships with audit customers, including various levels of management

· Participate in annual risk assessment processes, including the identification of key risks and development of the audit plan

· Exhibit a sense of urgency in completing assigned tasks for audits, initiatives, and other department projects in accordance with prescribed milestones

· Maintain and leverage current knowledge of broad range of EHS regulations and matters impacting the energy industry as well as leading practices within the industry and company

Key experience to be successful in this role

Requires technical skills and advanced knowledge/experience in varied EHS fields, including environmental or safety management systems, waste management, clean air, water, industrial health, occupational safety, etc.

Basic Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or other environmental, health and safety related disciplines

· In addition to required degree, five (5) or more years of related EHS work experience

Desired Qualifications

· In addition to desired degree, eight (8) years related work experience

· Certified Safety Professional and/or Registered Environmental Manager and/or BEAC Certified Professional Environmental Auditor and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist and/or completion of OSHA 500/501 trainer courses

· Master’s degree in environmental, health and safety, business or other related discipline

· Utilities/energy industry experience

· Internal and/or external auditing experience

· Resourcefulness when managing through ambiguity, including complex audit projects

· Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects

· Ability to identify and assess risks and impacts to develop and manage a risk-informed audit scope and approach

· Acknowledgement of customer needs and expectations, including ability to adjust tasks accordingly to add value to the business

· Project management and supervisory experience, including coaching skills

· Data analytics experience
