About us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.
As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.
Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

Take the technical lead on electrical investment projects that help keep some of Britain’s most important gas infrastructure safe, reliable, and resilient.
As Lead Electrical Engineer, you’ll have end-to-end accountability for electrical projects, from definition and design through construction, commissioning, and close-out, ensuring delivery meets safety, technical, cost, quality, and regulatory requirements

Why this role matters

Across our East Region, our compressor stations, Bacton Gas Terminal, and wider operational sites depend on safe and reliable electrical infrastructure. You’ll help protect that performance by delivering investment projects and making sure new and modified assets meet the right technical standards.
It’s an opportunity to combine your electrical expertise with project leadership, influencing designs, solving site challenges, and working with contractors and operational teams to deliver improvements that have a real impact on our network.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead design management and technical assurance, ensuring electrical designs meet National Gas specifications and modification requirements
  • Review contractor design submissions and challenge solutions to achieve safe, compliant, and practical outcomes
  • Lead electrical projects through design, construction, testing, commissioning, and close-out
  • Monitor site activity through technical inspections, quality assessments, and safety and environmental audits
  • Support project teams and contractors to resolve electrical issues and maintain safe, effective delivery
  • Review electrical and instrumentation test records, drawings, asset records, and handover documentation
  • Build strong relationships across engineering, operations, project teams, suppliers, and contractors

What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who combines strong electrical engineering expertise with experience of delivering projects in complex industrial environments and enjoys taking technical ownership from design through to commissioning.
Essential
  • HNC/Degree (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline, with demonstrable additional industry experience
  • Strong experience of industrial electrical systems, including design, installation, inspection, testing, and commissioning
  • Experience of electrical design management and design approval processes within construction or engineering projects
  • Knowledge of LV and HV electrical equipment and applicable British and international standards
  • Experience of electrical requirements for potentially explosive or hazardous area environments
  • Strong understanding of electrical, health and safety, CDM, and environmental requirements
  • Experience of delivering projects against scope, programme, cost, quality, safety, and risk requirements
  • Full UK driving licence
Desirable
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • C&G 2396 Low Voltage Design, Erection and Verification
  • CompEx Ex12
  • BS 7671 inspection and testing experience, training, or qualifications such as C&G 2391-52
  • Experience of electrical infrastructure within gas transmission, utilities, energy, or another safety-critical industry

Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

What we offer

  • Market-leading double-match pension (up to 12% company contribution)
  • Annual performance bonus up to 6%
  • Company car (subject to business mileage)
  • Access to the Tusker salary sacrifice car scheme
  • 26 days holiday (plus statutory holidays)
  • 10x salary life assurance and income protection
  • Flexible benefits including healthcare, dental, and technology options
  • Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities
