Job Description Summary
The Lead Generator Diagnostics and Robotics Specialist – Responsible for providing technical leadership and executing complex electro-mechanical testing (EMT), robotic-assisted inspections, generator diagnostics, and specialized generator monitoring services. This role focuses on Stator Leak Monitoring Systems (SLMS), Rotational Velocity Method (RVM) torsional testing, and the deployment of advanced robotic platforms for internal generator assessments. Operating in fossil and nuclear power stations worldwide, this role involves the installation, calibration, and maintenance of advanced instrumentation, as well as the interpretation of technical data to assess the operational health of turbine-generator equipment. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert (SME), integrating diagnostic solutions to enhance safety, data accuracy, and operational efficiency, while ensuring all field operations adhere to safety, quality, and schedule commitments.Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Technical Execution & Field Operations: Conduct or direct critical generator tests, including SLMS commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Execute RVM torsional vibration measurements, including probe installation, data acquisition, and diagnostic analysis. Deploy and operate robotic inspection systems for internal generator assessments, integrating robotic data outputs with traditional EMT data for comprehensive diagnostic reporting.
- Commercial Responsibilities:
- Work directly with Regional Commercial Managers, Service Managers, and Sales Managers to ensure requested workscopes and technical specifications—including robotic service offerings—are reviewed and that I&LES can meet all customer/contract requirements.
- Perform in-depth research, including review of inspection reports and historical data, and interpret drawings to translate information into accurate inspection requirements.
- Provide engineering support teams with technical data and knowledge of I&LES service offerings.
- Work with Product Services to develop enhancements, evaluate new robotic technologies, and streamline procedures for the I&LES commercial process.
- Coordinate proposal development to ensure customer-required schedule dates are met and quality proposals are issued.
- Project Management & Administration: Manage costing and proposal development within Workflows, Excel, Access, and SalesForce. Maintain field data, robotic diagnostic logs, and project documentation.
- Technical Leadership: Provide onsite leadership, mentoring, and training for less experienced personnel. Create technical work instructions and procedures for both traditional EMT and robotic-assisted testing. Lead quality reviews across multiple inspection technologies.
- Customer Interface: Communicate effectively with internal engineering teams, site representatives, and external customers during planning, execution, and post-job meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; OR an associate's degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Non-Destructive Technology (or equivalent) with at least 5 years of relevant field experience.
- Technical Expertise:
- Expertise in generator design principles, generator operation, and electro-mechanical testing.
- Advanced knowledge in the installation/maintenance of generator monitoring systems (e.g., SLMS, partial discharge (PD), shorted turn, vibration sensors, accelerometers, proximity probes, flow sensors).
- Proficiency in torsional vibration measurement techniques (e.g., rotary encoders, magnetic pickups, optical sensors) and deployment of remote inspection tools, automated crawlers, or robotic diagnostic platforms.
- Strong analytical skills regarding rotational velocity and sensor-driven data.
- Professional Skills:
- Ability to work well within a short time cycle and high-pressure environments.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to organize and train team members.
- Operational Requirements:
- High Travel: Willingness to travel globally on short notice and for extended periods (70% travel during outage seasons).
- Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work flexible hours as required by project schedules.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project Scheduler), Modal Analysis Software, and other applicable data acquisition or robotic interface systems.
Desired Characteristics
Ability to handle multiple projects concurrently and be very results-oriented.- MS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience in the use or development of telemetry-based measurement systems.
- Acoustic, vibration, or mechanical oscillation measurement experience with steam turbine, gas turbine, or generator technology.
- Proven project management experience executing measurement technology development.
- Direct experience with field-ready robotic inspection systems in power generation environments.
- Commitment to teamwork, team success, and strong customer focus.
