The Ideal Candidate

The Learning & Development Manager turns business needs into engaging, practical learning experiences that build employee capability, improve performance, and support meaningful career growth across Genesco’s corporate functions and brands. This hands-on role combines instructional design, content creation, facilitation, and end-to-end program management.

Partnering with leaders and subject matter experts, you’ll develop learning solutions that support onboarding, manager and leadership development, career growth, and evolving business priorities. You’ll bring curiosity, creativity, and structure to new challenges while owning programs from initial discovery through delivery and evaluation.

How You Will Make an Impact

Create Engaging Learning Experiences

  • Design instructor-led, virtual, blended, and self-paced learning that connects business priorities to clear learning outcomes and practical application.

  • Create polished, original content, including facilitator guides, presentations, digital learning, videos, job aids, assessments, toolkits, and performance support resources.

  • Translate complex, technical, or loosely defined topics into clear, engaging learning experiences using storytelling, visual design, interaction, and practice.

  • Develop learning pathways and curricula that support onboarding, manager and leadership capability, career growth, role readiness, and other organizational priorities.

  • Evaluate learning effectiveness and refine content, delivery methods, and learner experiences based on feedback and results.

Facilitate Across Audiences

  • Facilitate engaging, inclusive learning for individual contributors, people leaders, senior leaders, and cross-functional groups, encouraging participation, reflection, discussion, and practical application.

  • Adapt content, tone, pace, and delivery methods to the audience, business context, and learning environment while maintaining learning objectives.

  • Prepare internal facilitators and subject matter experts through practical materials, rehearsal, coaching, and feedback.

Lead Programs from Idea to Impact

  • Own assigned learning programs and projects from discovery through evaluation, bringing structure and accountability to work with evolving requirements.

  • Develop project plans, milestones, workflows, stakeholder roles, communications, success measures, and quality checkpoints; identify risks and elevate decisions when needed.

  • Research learning technologies, platforms, and external resources; recommend solutions that balance learner experience, business needs, practicality, and cost, and support implementation of approved solutions.

Partner, Explore, and Solve

  • Partner with leaders and subject matter experts to identify learning needs, challenge assumptions constructively, and recommend solutions that balance creativity, practicality, and business value.

  • Build trusted relationships across a matrixed organization, communicate recommendations and tradeoffs clearly, and influence progress without direct authority.

  • Explore emerging learning practices, facilitation techniques, and generative AI, translating promising ideas into responsible, useful improvements.

Experience and Skills You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in learning and development, instructional design, education, human resources, organizational development, business, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

  • 6+ years of experience in learning and development, instructional design, talent development, training, organizational development, or a related field, including substantial hands-on responsibility for designing, facilitating, and implementing learning solutions across multiple stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience independently leading learning initiatives from needs identification through design, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

  • Experience facilitating engaging learning for varied audiences, including people leaders and cross-functional groups.

  • Ability to share work samples or walk through examples demonstrating your approach to learning design, content development, and facilitation. Anonymized samples are welcome.

Core Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of adult-learning principles, instructional design, facilitation practices, and practical learning evaluation.

  • Creative, learner-centered approach with strong visual and written storytelling skills and the judgment to match the solution to the need.

  • Ability to translate complex or loosely defined business needs into practical learning solutions, creating structure and clarity as priorities and requirements evolve.

  • Confident facilitation skills, with the ability to connect with varied audiences and adjust in the moment while maintaining credibility and learning objectives.

  • Strong project management, organization, prioritization, and follow-through, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work.

  • Clear communication and collaborative relationship-building skills, with openness to feedback and the ability to influence without direct authority.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Teams, and related Microsoft 365 applications, plus experience with learning management systems and digital content-authoring tools.

  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a continuous-improvement mindset, with a willingness to test ideas, learn quickly, and challenge conventional approaches when appropriate.

  • Ability to travel periodically and adjust working hours when business or learner needs require it.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with platforms and tools such as Absorb, Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, AhaSlides, or comparable solutions.

  • Experience using generative AI and related digital tools to support content development, facilitation preparation, and learning workflows, with attention to accuracy, confidentiality, and responsible use.

  • Experience supporting corporate employee populations, ideally within a multi-brand, shared-services, retail, or geographically dispersed organization.

  • Experience designing onboarding, manager, leadership, career-development, or high-potential programs.

  • Relevant learning or facilitation certification.
