Under the leadership of Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Managing Director Anna Fitzloff, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theatre by producing events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences.

Reporting to the Producer, the Line Producer is a key member of the Artistic and Producing teams responsible for directly overseeing A.R.T.’s core artistic projects, which are a large and central piece of how A.R.T. advances its mission to expand the boundaries of theater. The Line Producer focuses much of their time supporting the producing department on both administrative tasks as well as the creation and stewardship of deep relationships with artists developing work at A.R.T. This support encompasses current programmatic offerings at the A.R.T. as well as building foundations for future season programming. While artists are under contract, the Line Producer serves as a secondary supervisor, advancing projects in the near term and for future seasons. Functionally, this involves facilitating artists’ needs as employees as well as holding artists accountable to the A.R.T. mission, values, and community agreements. Additionally, the Line Producer works across all departments to establish efficient and effective project management systems for all artistic programming, and supports the Producer, Director of Production, and General Manager in creating, maintaining, and reconciling large project budgets. This role also provides critical support, in collaboration with the production and facilities departments, for programming taking place throughout the Goel Center for Creativity and Performance that lives alongside A.R.T.’s season programming such as student residencies, special events, rentals, pedagogical activities, community programming, etc. The Line Producer is a key contributor to the programming vision of the A.R.T., collaborating closely with and in support of the senior artistic team to bring dynamic and impactful art to the A.R.T.’s audiences and community.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Artistic Programming and Development:

  • As assigned by the artistic team, lead projects from start to finish, taking initiative to achieve stated project goals with an organized workflow.
  • Creates and stewards relationships with a wide range of artists and external stakeholders that will help A.R.T. satisfy its mission to expand the boundaries of theater– including with artists who are based in Greater Boston or New England, in New York and other locations within the United States, and internationally.
  • Contribute to programming conversations with the senior artistic team utilizing knowledge of current artistic landscape in several disciplines to evaluate potential future projects in accordance with A.R.T.’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with external stakeholders (rehearsal/performance/event venues, vendors, producing entities, community organizations, etc.) with a focus on the Greater Boston and New England area.
  • Works with local partners to program artistic and community events into the Goel Center’s many spaces, including but not limited to concerts, podcast recordings, readings, film screenings, panels, classes, dance parties, and exhibits.

Artistic Management:

  • Serves as a front-line project manager for A.R.T.’s core artistic projects, including new theatrical productions, touring productions, concerts, recitals, workshops, and readings.
  • Creates and manages budgets for each production, workshop and project they are managing, collaborating with the Producer, production management and general management. Responsible for all financial decision making and expense tracking on projects totaling $2M annually.
  • Advises general management on the hiring of creatives, artistic staff, and performers on productions, workshops, and readings.
  • Participates in casting processes providing essential support in arranging and preparing for casting sessions, attending sessions and AEA EPAs, and facilitating successful and efficient communication between A.R.T.’s artistic staff and outside casting directors.
  • Works closely in support of the Producer, Associate Producer, and Director of Production to develop rehearsal and performance schedules for all programming.
  • Facilitates between guest artists and A.R.T. departments, assessing problems by either making and communicating a decision or, when necessary, prioritizing problems for review by leadership. Requires a high level of problem-solving with great emotional intelligence to reach solutions across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides de facto leadership across artists, crew, and staff on all artistic projects they are managing, Responsible for onboarding and supervising guest artists and their work while employed at the A.R.T.
  • Secondary manager for guest artists engaged on additional projects as assigned by the Producer.

Business Operations, Rentals, Marketing, and Fundraising:

  • Provides administrative support to the producing and general management teams creating expense reports, tracking expenditures against project budgets, and generally aiding in the day-to-day business of A.R.T.’s core artistic projects.
  • Provides administrative and logistical support for use of A.R.T.’s spaces at the Goel Center (rehearsal rooms, studios, theaters, lobby, and yard) for rentals, student residencies, special events, etc.
  • Coordinates support for A.R.T.’s visiting stage management teams, including maintaining supplies, technology and institutional documentation in support of their work.
  • Manages talkbacks and other pre, post, and surround performance events, independently developing and managing staffing, logistical and budgetary plans for these events.
  • Represents the A.R.T. at fundraising, community engagement, and artistic events when requested.
  • Represents the A.R.T. at various industry convenings, including external workshops and readings, conferences, and symposiums, when requested.

Basic Qualifications are the minimum requirements a candidate must meet to be considered for this role.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience in theatrical producing, line producing, general management, production management, artistic administration, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Exceptional people skills and the ability to prioritize collaboration, flexibility and adaptability in their work.
  • Ability to communicate directly and clearly with internal and external stakeholders and maintain an organized workflow on all projects in their portfolio.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with care.
  • Basic familiarity with theatrical union agreements, including but not limited to LORT agreements with AEA, USA, and SDC, is a plus but not required.
  • First Aid/CPR training is a plus.

    • Ability to work evenings and weekends required.

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
