We are recruiting for a Linguist to join a leading global technology organisation’s cutting-edge AI research team, supporting multilingual and low-resource language research.

This is a research-focused opportunity for someone with a strong academic background in general/theoretical linguistics who is also comfortable working with data and Python. You’ll collaborate with research scientists, machine learning engineers and data scientists on the evaluation and development of multilingual AI systems.

🔬 What you’ll be doing

• Conduct linguistic analysis across large multilingual datasets
• Analyse AI model outputs and identify linguistic errors and patterns
• Help build, refine and test multilingual evaluation and challenge datasets
• Develop and improve annotation and translation guidelines
• Conduct typological, sociolinguistic and corpus-based research
• Analyse areas including syntax, morphology, pragmatics, phonology, dialect variation and writing systems
• Support Responsible AI research, including cultural and linguistic bias analysis
• Review academic literature and translate findings into practical recommendations
• Assess language-data quality and provide actionable feedback
• Use Python/pandas notebooks to inspect and analyse linguistic data
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers and native-language speakers

🎓 What we’re looking for

• Completed PhD in Linguistics or a closely related linguistic discipline
• Strong research-level grounding in general/theoretical linguistics
• Native or near-native English
• Native or near-native proficiency in a Dravidian or Bantu language, particularly Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu or Swahili/Kiswahili
• Experience using Python, including reading, adapting and running data-analysis notebooks
• Some exposure to NLP, machine translation, speech technology or multilingual AI
• Strong research, analytical and communication skills
• Comfortable working independently across fast-moving and sometimes ambiguous research projects
• Experience collaborating with technical stakeholders such as ML/NLP engineers, data scientists or research scientists

✨ Experience with low-resource languages, corpus linguistics, multilingual datasets, language typology or AI evaluation would be particularly valuable.
