Patch is a network of hyperlocal news sites dedicated to delivering timely, relevant news that connects people with their communities. We're looking for a curious, tech-savvy content producer who can combine strong journalism fundamentals with modern AI tools to produce high-quality local news at scale.

About the Role

As an AI-Assisted Local News Content Producer, you'll be responsible for identifying, researching and publishing 16-20 quick-turn local news stories each day for Patch sites in California.

You'll use AI as a productivity tool to help draft stories, but strong news judgment and editing skills are essential in this role. You'll determine what is newsworthy, verify information, craft compelling headlines and ensure every story meets Patch's editorial standards.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys writing, follows local news closely, embraces new technology and can work independently in a fast-paced digital environment.

What You'll Do

  • Produce 16-20 local news stories per day across multiple Patch sites.
  • Use AI tools to efficiently draft and develop accurate, engaging local news content
  • Identify newsworthy stories from government agencies, municipalities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, public meetings and community organizations.
  • Monitor social media, local websites, newsletters and public records to discover original story ideas and community trends
  • Create compelling, SEO-friendly headlines
  • Verify facts and ensure all content meets Patch's editorial standards.
  • Edit and proofread stories for AP Style, clarity, grammar and accuracy.
  • What We're Looking For

  • Experience writing for digital media, student publications, local news organizations or similar outlets.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Understanding of AP Style.
  • Comfortable using AI and emerging technology as part of the editorial workflow.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to recognize compelling local stories.
  • Creative thinker with the ability to generate story ideas independently.
  • Comfortable working independently and managing deadlines.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms as reporting and newsgathering tools.
  • Technologically savvy with the ability to quickly learn new publishing tools and workflows.
