At GroupHEALTH, we’re proud of the work we do, but it’s how we do it that truly sets us apart. We’re a fast-moving, ever-evolving, stable organization with deep roots and a bold vision: to transform the way Canadians experience benefits. We combine agility with long-term stability to create meaningful impact.
Here, you’ll find more than just a job. You’ll find a purpose-driven, people-first culture where kindness, collaboration, and curiosity thrive. Whether you’ve been here fifteen years or fifteen days, you’ll notice right away: our people are genuinely invested in one another’s success and delivering exceptional experiences to our clients and plan members.
About the Role
The Manager, Data Engineering & Governance will lead the team responsible for building and governing the trusted data foundation for the GroupHEALTH Family of Companies, ensuring the Insurance Data Platform (IDP) is reliable, governed, reusable and aligned to business priorities. Reporting to the Director, Data & Intelligence, the Manager will translate the Data & Intelligence strategy into an executable roadmap, develop the team and operating model, and establish practical standards across Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Purview and Erwin Data Modeler. The role works closely with Insights & Reporting, Analytics & AI, Technology, Security, Privacy and business leaders so trusted data can be used confidently across reporting, analytics, AI and operational products.
This is a hybrid role based out of our Surrey, BC head office.
What to Expect in Your First 3 Months
- First 30 Days: Build working relationships with each team member and key partners. Assess current capabilities, accountabilities, delivery commitments and risks across Data Engineering, Architecture and Governance. Confirm the near-term team operating model, decision rights, intake priorities and measures of success with the Director, Data & Intelligence.
- First 60 Days: Understand and manage the end-to-end standards for Fabric medallion architecture, pipeline and data product delivery, Erwin enterprise data modelling, Purview cataloguing and lineage, data quality, stewardship, privacy and release controls. Establish a practical architecture and governance review cadence that does not slow delivery. Publish a prioritized roadmap connecting platform foundations, source onboarding, curated and mastered data, governance enablement and business-facing data needs. Introduce clear sprint planning, dependency management, RAG reporting, risk escalation and capacity visibility.
- First 90 Days: Create role clarity, development goals and succession coverage for the team. Identify capability and capacity gaps, define a phased hiring and onboarding plan, and establish coaching routines that improve ownership, decision-making and delivery consistency. Demonstrate measurable progress on priority IDP capabilities, including reliable Fabric pipelines and curated assets, approved Erwin models, Purview catalog and lineage coverage, data quality controls, issue ownership and documented operational support. Provide leadership with a concise view of outcomes, risks, decisions and next priorities.
What You’ll Do
People Leadership & Team Growth
- Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team spanning data engineering, data architecture, data modelling, data quality and data governance

- Build the team deliberately through workforce planning, hiring, onboarding, knowledge transfer and succession planning
Strategy, Roadmap & Delivery Management
- Translate the Data & Intelligence strategy into a practical roadmap and quarterly outcomes for Engineering & Governance
- Prioritize work across platform foundations, ingestion, modelling, data quality, governance and operational support based on business value, risk, dependencies and capacity
- Maintain delivery visibility through plans, milestones, RAG reporting, decisions, risks, issues and dependencies; escalate early and recommend options
Data Engineering & Microsoft Fabric
- Own engineering standards and delivery practices for the IDP, including Fabric, medallion architecture, pipelines, notebooks, orchestration, monitoring, deployment and support
- Ensure data products and platform components are scalable, supportable, secure, observable and cost-conscious
- Partner with Technology and Security on environments, access, release management, resilience and production operations
Data Architecture & Modelling
- Own enterprise data architecture and modelling practices across conceptual, logical and physical models, with Erwin Data Modeler as a core modelling capability
- Ensure source, integration, curated, mastered and consumption models are well designed, documented and aligned to business concepts and system realities
Data Governance, Quality & Metadata
- Provide leadership oversight for Microsoft Purview, including catalog, glossary, domains, classification, scans, lineage, data quality, ownership and stewardship workflows
- Establish practical governance standards for Critical Data Elements, definitions, data quality rules, issue management, access, privacy, retention and auditability
- Build accountability with business Data Owners and Data Stewards, embedding governance in delivery rather than running it as a separate administrative process
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Work closely with Insights & Reporting and Analytics & AI leaders to provide trusted, reusable data foundations and clarify handoffs, priorities and service expectations
- Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs in plain language to business and executive stakeholders
- Manage vendor and partner contributions, ensuring deliverables, knowledge transfer, architecture, quality and documentation meet GroupHEALTH standards
