Responsibilities
Job Purpose
The Public Engagement Manager owns and directly executes public engagement for a portfolio of renewable energy projects, primarily during development and, as needed, through construction. This is a hands-on role responsible for carrying the work from stakeholder research and planning through outreach, meetings, issue response, supporter development, and follow-through. As the lead for local stakeholder risk and engagement on assigned projects, the Manager brings local intelligence into project planning, identifies risks and opportunities, and works with project leadership to implement actions that support site control, permitting, approvals, schedule certainty, and long-term project viability.
This is an opportunity to play a visible, influential role in advancing renewable energy generation and transmission projects by building trusted local relationships and shaping engagement strategies that respond to the unique needs of each project and community. The Manager works across disciplines, exercises meaningful ownership and judgment, and brings together internal teams and external partners to turn local insight into effective action. This individual-contributor role may also lead field teams and external partners.
Key Accountabilities
- Own project engagement: Lead the public engagement workstream for assigned projects from stakeholder research and planning through internal alignment and buy-in, execution, and coordination of significant external commitments.
- Assess local conditions and risk: Conduct local due diligence and stakeholder mapping; monitor local government, civic, and community dynamics, organized opposition, misinformation, and emerging concerns; and translate local intelligence into practical engagement, education, and mitigation strategies.
- Develop and execute engagement strategies: Create stakeholder engagement, public education, supporter development, and advocacy strategies tailored to project stage, commercial priorities, local context, and local, state, provincial, and federal regulatory milestones, including opportunities for informed supporters to participate in public processes.
- Advise and align the project team: Advise project leadership on stakeholder conditions, tradeoffs, reputational considerations, and potential effects on project strategy, schedule, cost, approvals, financing requirements, and long-term viability. Build cross-functional alignment with Development, Land, Environmental, Permitting, Legal, Government Affairs, Project Communications, Construction, and Operations and escalate material issues with clear recommendations.
- Lead outreach and communications partnership: Lead or support stakeholder outreach, public meetings, hearings, open houses, and community and landowner events. Partner with the Project Communications lead to develop project positioning, messaging, presentations, outreach materials, digital content, and issue response plans, bringing local insight, stakeholder strategy, and engagement objectives to the communications process.
- Manage commitments, investments, and resources: Develop recommendations for community investments, sponsorships, partnerships, and project commitments; manage approved activities; and lead field teams, consultants, vendors, and local partners within established scopes and budgets.
- Measure, document, and report progress: Track stakeholder risks, supporter development, commitments, milestone readiness, budgets, and resource performance; maintain accurate records in company systems; provide concise updates and recommended actions to project and Public Engagement leadership; and support effective handoffs across development, construction, and operations.
