Primary Purpose: The Manager, Student Services provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for student support programming within the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program in the College of Medicine. Reporting to the Director, Student Services, this role establishes the vision, strategic priorities, and long-term development of programs that support medical students’ academic success, wellness, and professional development, while also leading and managing a team of student services staff.
The Manager applies expertise in student affairs, career advising and mentorship, program development, and medical education to drive innovation, strengthen student support initiatives, and enhance coordinated services. This role leads a dedicated team in delivering impactful, evidence-informed support services across all sites and through all years of medical school, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and the College’s strategic priorities.
Nature of Work: This position plays a pivotal leadership role within Student Services, exercising independent judgment to develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives that advance student success and well-being and career development. The Manager cultivates collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including learners, faculty, academic departments, student services staff, residents, and provincial partners.
The role requires the ability to analyze emerging trends in student support, wellness, and professional development, translating these insights into actionable program improvements. Operating in a complex environment with confidential student interactions, competing priorities, and evolving accreditation requirements, the incumbent demonstrates strategic thinking, innovation, and leadership in shaping short- and long-term program outcomes.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities
Office of Student Affairs (OSA)
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for student affairs programming that supports learner wellness, academic success, professional development, and student engagement across all years of the UGME program.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive framework for student support services that fosters learner well-being, resilience, professionalism, and successful progression through medical training.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of student affairs initiatives, ensuring responsiveness to learner needs and emerging trends in medical education.
- Provide leadership and oversight for student support programming, ensuring effective coordination of services, activities, and resources across all UGME campuses and distributed learning sites.
- Oversee the development, delivery, and evaluation of student affairs curriculum and co-curricular programming, including wellness, professionalism, transition, and learner development initiatives embedded throughout the UGME curriculum.
- Guide the implementation of student-focused events, workshops, orientation activities, and leadership development opportunities that enhance learner engagement and success.
- Ensure effective processes and supports are in place for students requiring academic accommodation, leave management, wellness supports, and referrals to university and community resources.
- Provide consultation and confidential support to students experiencing academic, personal, wellness, or professional challenges, facilitating appropriate referrals and interventions as required.
- Oversee the delivery and evaluation of student support curriculum components, including wellness and professional development programming within UGME courses and learning experiences.
- Lead initiatives that strengthen learner engagement and community building, including Peer Learning Networks (PLNs), student leadership opportunities, and other student-centered programs.
- Collaborate with Distributed Medical Education sites, including SLIC communities, to enhance learner support, strengthen community connections, and ensure equitable access to student affairs programming and services regardless of training location.
- Foster partnerships with University of Saskatchewan student support units and external organizations to enhance available resources and services for learners.
- Provide coverage for student support when required.
Office of Career Advising and Mentorship (OCAM)
- Provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive career advising framework supporting students throughout medical school and transition to residency.
- Oversee required and optional career advising activities that promote informed career exploration, specialty selection, residency preparation, and professional development.
- Utilize learner feedback, career advising outcomes, residency match trends, and environmental scans to identify opportunities for program enhancement and innovation.
- Provide oversight of mentorship programming and support meaningful engagement of faculty, residents, alumni, and community physicians involved in advising and mentorship activities.
- Coordinate and support faculty advisors and physicians involved in residency application preparation, ensuring consistent processes for recruitment, onboarding, communication, and engagement.
- Monitor provincial and national trends related to physician workforce planning, residency matching, and career development to inform advising strategies and program priorities.
- Promote equitable career advising and mentorship opportunities for learners across all UGME campuses and distributed learning sites.
General Leadership, Management, and Strategic Oversight
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Services, Associate Dean UGME, and other leaders to advance the strategic direction of student support services within UGME.
- Provide leadership, supervision, and performance management for staff within the Student Services portfolio, including recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, professional development, workload management, and leave administration
- Establish performance measures, program evaluation frameworks, and reporting mechanisms to assess outcomes, demonstrate impact, and support continuous quality improvement.
- Oversee faculty, resident, volunteer, and stakeholder engagement in student support initiatives, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and accreditation standards.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with learners, faculty, academic departments, health system partners, community physicians, and university stakeholders.
- Manage operating budgets, monitor expenditures, and provide financial reporting and recommendations to support effective resource allocation.
- Ensure compliance with UGME accreditation standards, university policies, and best practices related to student support programming.
- Monitor trends and emerging issues in medical education, learner wellness, career development, and student affairs to inform strategic planning and program development.
- Lead special projects and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
Education: University master’s degree or equivalent in social work, health care administration, education, psychology, or a related field preferably at the master’s level. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.an education or equivalent degree is required; equivalent work experience will be considered.
Experience: 5–10 years of progressively responsible experience in student services, program leadership, higher education administration, health professions education, or a related field.
Experience leading programs, initiatives, or teams in complex organizational environments.
Post-secondary or health care education experience strongly preferred.
Skills: High professional integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive matters with diplomacy and discretion. Exceptional interpersonal, communication (oral and written), organizational, and analytical skills. Proven ability to take initiative and be self-directed. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and competing demands with tight timelines. Strong leadership, delegation, and collaborative skills. Creativity, problem-solving, and attention to detail. Coaching and performance management expertise. Ability to research, present, and implement complex solutions effectively. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, electronic calendars, and web-based tools.
