About the job:

As the Managing Director, Head of North America Banks Coverage, you will be responsible for the strategic direction, growth, and profitability of BBVA's North American Banks portfolio. The sector includes commercial banks, regional banks, investment banks, broker-dealers, bank holding companies, and specialty finance companies. The role does not include responsibility for insurance companies, asset managers, private equity firms, or other non-bank financial institutions.

You will lead BBVA's coverage strategy for the sector, serving as the senior relationship sponsor for key clients and driving revenue growth through the coordinated delivery of BBVA's full suite of products, including Financing, Capital Markets, Global Markets, and Transaction Banking solutions.

This role requires a senior banking executive with deep sector expertise, an established network of executive relationships, and a proven ability to lead teams, develop client franchises, and originate strategic opportunities across the banking sector.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Growth

  • Define and execute the business strategy for BBVA's North America Banks portfolio, with responsibility for revenue growth, client penetration, wallet share, and risk-adjusted profitability.
  • Serve as the senior relationship sponsor for key clients, developing and maintaining trusted relationships with CEOs, CFOs, Treasurers, Heads of Funding, and other senior decision-makers.
  • Originate and lead strategic client opportunities, coordinating product partners across Financing, Capital Markets, Global Markets, and Transaction Banking to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Leverage BBVA's global CIB franchise to provide differentiated solutions and strengthen client relationships.

Team Management & Collaboration

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of coverage professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence.
  • Champion cross-border and cross-product collaboration to deliver coordinated client coverage and maximize franchise value.

Risk, Capital & Portfolio Management

  • Manage the risk-return profile of the portfolio, ensuring disciplined capital allocation and alignment with BBVA's Risk Appetite Framework.
  • Maintain the highest standards of regulatory compliance and ensure adherence to all applicable risk, AML, KYC, and conduct requirements.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. An MBA, CFA, or equivalent advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of corporate or investment banking experience, including a significant track record covering banks and banking groups.
  • Demonstrated success originating and leading complex banking-sector transactions across lending, debt capital markets, and risk management solutions.

Key Competencies

  • Deep Sector Expertise: Strong understanding of banking business models, capital and liquidity frameworks, regulatory requirements, and emerging industry trends.
  • Executive Network: Established senior-level relationships across major North American banking institutions.
  • Leadership & Commercial Judgment: Proven ability to lead teams, grow client franchises, and balance business development with sound risk management.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. Fluency in English required; Spanish is a strong plus.
  • Cultural Alignment: Collaborative, inclusive leadership style with the ability to operate effectively in a global and multicultural organization.

With respect to this position in our New York Office, the expected base salary ranges from $350,000 to $415,000. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
