Diatom Group | Remote (Americas or Europe)
We're looking for the person who will become the right hand and partner of Diatom's Founder and Managing Director on marine restoration. Working side by side with the founder, you will lead our marine biodiversity monitoring work on restoration projects and build this business line together in the emerging biodiversity credit market.
Scope of the role
Partner to the founder
- Act as the founder's counterpart on marine restoration: co-shape strategy, priorities, and Diatom's service offering
- Take the lead on day-to-day decisions and represent Diatom with clients and project partners
MRV development and delivery
- Coordinate the development and implementation of a marine biodiversity Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Plan, initially for a kelp restoration project in Portugal
- Lead the development of marine monitoring frameworks and protocols
- Coordinate the MRV Reports
Business growth
- Identify new opportunities, clients, and partners in marine restoration and biodiversity credits
- Contribute to proposals
- Follow developments in biodiversity credit frameworks
What we're looking for
- Background in marine benthic ecology, with hands-on experience in underwater monitoring projects, including enhancing monitoring protocols
- An entrepreneurial mindset: you think and act as a partner in the business, taking ownership with minimal oversight
- Demonstrated project management ability: planning, coordination, and disciplined delivery against deadlines
- Fluency in English, written and spoken, is essential
- Curiosity and flexibility around innovative technologies and methods, from field ecology to digital monitoring
- Easygoing and collaborative, with the humility to listen and the assertiveness to move things forward
- Desirable: knowledge of Scrum management and software development
- Candidates based in Brazil are a plus
Terms
- You will be part of the Diatom Group team, working as an independent contractor (own company / invoicing entity required)
- Startup-style contract: an initial 6-month term, with the possibility of renewal for a further 6 months
- After this period, depending on performance, a share or partnership in Diatom Blue Tech may be offered
- €1,400 per month, based on performance and agreed deliverables, not on hours worked
- Occasional fieldwork and travel
Two things to check:
- Meaning of "partner": the intro describes a working partnership from day one, while the formal share or partnership stays conditional in the terms. If you want to avoid any reading that equity comes with the role, I can add "with a path to formal partnership" to the intro.
- Founder's name: I referred to you by title only; I can add your name if you prefer.
Added to the MRV scope, next to the report coordination line.
