The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Reporting to the Manager, Generation Forecasting & Resource Adequacy, we are looking for a Market Fundamentals Analyst to lead and support forecasting and market analysis initiatives that inform Alberta’s evolving electricity market. You will conduct market assessments, forecasting, simulation modeling, and resource adequacy analysis to support strategic decision-making, market design initiatives, and grid reliability.

Working across the AESO, you will develop long-term market outlooks, analyze industry trends and policy impacts, prepare forecasting reports, and provide data-driven insights through market simulations, financial modeling, and research. To succeed in this role, you will possess strong analytical capabilities, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development of components of the Long-Term Outlook, market assessments, and ad hoc analyses using production cost, resource adequacy, and market simulation models.
  • Deliver analytics and insights to support the implementation of Alberta's evolving electricity market and transmission planning frameworks.
  • Manage the scope, timelines, and delivery of forecasting and analysis for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze and provide insights on Alberta and interconnected electricity markets, including related commodity markets.
  • Research industry trends and emerging market developments.
  • Support data collection, analysis, and reporting initiatives for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of reports, briefing notes, and stakeholder materials.
  • Document methodologies, assumptions, processes, and customer requirements.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance forecasting and analytical capabilities.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, while fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and teamwork.

What you’ll bring to us:

  • Undergraduate degree in Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Business, or a related field; a graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • 4-8 years of experience in energy market forecasting, analysis, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and applying Restructured Energy Market (REM) models.
  • Strong quantitative and modeling skills, including experience with spreadsheets, databases, statistical tools, programming languages, and simulation software.
  • Solid understanding of power system operations, electricity markets, and forecasting methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Experience with Optimal Transmission Planning, locational marginal pricing, and other market modeling approaches is an asset.
  • Knowledge of generation asset financial modeling and electricity market development is an asset.
  • Experience analyzing electricity, natural gas, or other commodity markets is an asset.
