Are you interested in boating and want to join the fight against seasickness? Do you want to work with control of real operating vessels and with real-time adaptation? Do you want to verify your work on a real boat? Are you and your friend seeking a master's thesis project at an innovative company starting in January 2027? Then this thesis project is for you!
Here’s an opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant team at Humphree (Humphree.com, Humphree Stabilization (vimeo), and Lightning by Humphree (youtube.com)). Read below to learn more!
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Humphree is a pioneering marine technology company based in Gothenburg and is looking for a pair of master students for a thesis project within control systems.
Suggested title: Vessel speed estimation using IMU data.
Background
Central to the stabilization software is obtaining an accurate estimate of speed through water. This is used for gain scheduling, calculation of the control surface effects and more.
Problem: Sensors directly measuring the speed of the boat through water are often not available in installations. GPS does not account for flowing water and is sensitive to interference and signal dropouts. However, vibrations characteristic of vessel speed through water are often propagated through the hull. How can we obtain a reliable signal representing the speed through water given these circumstances?
Scope
Data for the project will be measured by Humphree and available at the start of the project. The measurements will consist of IMU vibration data and data from a reference speed source that can estimate the vessel's speed through water. The reference speed source can be assumed to be available during an initial calibration phase when a controlled experiment is carried out. The project will mainly consist of applying machine learning techniques on data to develop a model. The project will include the task of choosing suitable techniques. However, a neural network or similar is a strong candidate. The analysis will probably raise a need for additional measurements, and the thesis workers will perform those additional measurements in cooperation with staff from Humphree.
Evaluate the model in Humphree's test vessel, our Targa 31.
