About the team and what we do

The Nursing and Midwifery Council regulates nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. Our role is to protect the public by maintaining professional standards and taking action when concerns are raised about someone’s fitness to practise.

At a time of sustained scrutiny and change across maternity services, we are strengthening how professional expertise and regulatory intelligence inform our work. We are looking for an experienced registered midwife to join us as our Maternity Regulation Liaison.

This is an opportunity to connect information from across the regulatory landscape and help turn it into learning and improvement. Acting as a bridge between Professional Practice and Professional Regulation, you will bring together external insight and internal regulatory information to support the NMC’s midwifery strategy and strengthen public protection.

Your role and impact

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Midwifery, you will provide current professional midwifery and regulatory expertise to operational teams, senior leaders, colleagues and decision-makers across the NMC.

You will lead the development of regulatory intelligence and learning across maternity services. This will involve triangulating insight from fitness to practise, adjudications, education quality assurance, revalidation, research, stakeholder feedback and the wider maternity and neonatal landscape. You will help colleagues interpret what this information means, identify risk and translate learning into improvements in education, professional practice, guidance and regulatory activity.

You will also contribute specialist midwifery input to regulatory policy, standards, guidance, communications and engagement, helping ensure that our work is professionally informed, fair, proportionate and focused on public protection.
The role will involve:
· Providing clear, balanced and evidence-informed advice on midwifery practice, professional standards, risk and public protection
·Tiangulating midwifery and neonatal information across Professional Practice and Professional Regulation
·Identifying themes, emerging risks and safeguarding or public-protection concerns, and advising on appropriate action
·Translating regulatory intelligence and case learning into improvements in education, professional practice, guidance and policy
·Contributing specialist expertise to the development and review of regulatory tools, standards and communications
·Supporting consultation and engagement so that regulatory work reflects the perspectives of registrants, women, families, carers, employers, educators and system partners
·Building constructive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the four countries of the UK
·Working with research and professional colleagues to strengthen the evidence informing midwifery and perinatal regulation.

What you’ll bring

You must be a registered midwife with credible professional expertise and a current understanding of midwifery practice, professional standards and the UK health and care environment.

You will bring:
·Master’s-level qualification or equivalent relevant experience
·Strong understanding of professional regulation, public protection, safeguarding and risk assessment
·Ability to analyse and interrogate large volumes of complex information and identify meaningful patterns, risks and learning
·Excellent written skills, including the ability to produce clear, structured and concise reports grounded in evidence, legislation, policy and guidance
·The confidence to explain complex professional and regulatory issues with clarity, sensitivity and credibility
·Experience of providing professional advice, analysis or evaluation within a complex organisation or regulatory environment
·A strong record of building effective relationships and working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
·The ability to work collaboratively, encourage open debate, challenge assumptions appropriately and reach shared outcomes.

Knowledge of UK regulatory legislation and the NMC’s legislation, rules and standards would be helpful. Experience of developing or evaluating policy, guidance, standards or regulatory tools—and of engaging government bodies, providers, education institutions, professional bodies or networks across the UK—would also be valuable. Experience as an expert witness would be welcome.

You do not need to arrive knowing every aspect of the NMC’s work. What matters is that you combine professional credibility and analytical curiosity with sound judgement, collaborative instincts and a clear commitment to fairness and public protection.

Why join us?

This role offers a distinctive opportunity to shape how the NMC understands and responds to intelligence about maternity services. Your work will help connect information that might otherwise remain separate, strengthen organisational learning and ensure that regulatory insight leads to practical improvements for women, babies, families, professionals and the public.

Please note that this role requires you to review and work with sensitive and distressing material relating to fitness to practice cases and you will be given the appropriate support to deal with this material.

This will not change your terms and conditions and will be discussed with you prior to you taking up the post.
