About us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.
As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.
Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

Help shape the mechanical engineering solutions behind a major programme of investment in our gas transmission infrastructure.
As Mechanical Design Coordinator, you’ll provide technical leadership across capital projects, coordinating design from concept through construction, commissioning, and close-out to deliver safe, practical, compliant, and future-ready solutions.

Why this role matters

With our RIIO-T3 investment programme increasing the scale of projects across our network, strong engineering design and assurance will be critical to successful delivery. You’ll be at the centre of that work, bringing together project teams, engineering specialists, contractors, and design partners.
Your expertise will help ensure our infrastructure remains safe and reliable while influencing smarter, more sustainable engineering solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to challenge designs, manage technical risk, and make decisions that improve safety, operability, whole-life value, and environmental performance.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead mechanical design coordination and provide technical guidance and assurance throughout the project lifecycle
  • Coordinate consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver designs against project milestones
  • Review and challenge engineering designs, drawings, P&IDs, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation
  • Lead design, constructability, and technical assurance reviews to ensure solutions are safe, buildable, operable, and compliant
  • Manage engineering changes, technical queries, deviations, and design modifications through the appropriate governance processes
  • Coordinate CDM design requirements, engineering risk management, and process safety assessments
  • Support projects through procurement, construction, commissioning, handover, and close-out

What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who combines strong mechanical engineering knowledge with the confidence to coordinate people, challenge designs, and provide technical leadership across complex infrastructure projects.
Essential
  • Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline
  • Significant mechanical design or design coordination experience within gas, pipelines, utilities, energy, petrochemical, or process industries
  • Experience of gas transmission or comparable major process infrastructure
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary designs, external design organisations, and contractors
  • Strong understanding of CDM, process safety, technical assurance, and engineering risk management
  • Experience of engineering change control and reviewing technical engineering documentation
  • Experience supporting projects across design, construction, commissioning, and handover
  • Full UK driving licence
Desirable
  • Experience of transmission pipelines, Above Ground Installations, or Pressure Reduction Installations
  • Experience with HAZID, HAZOP, FPSA, or similar process safety assessments
  • Knowledge of Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations
  • Experience of G/35 engineering change processes
  • Knowledge of sustainable engineering, carbon reduction, and Net Zero principles

Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

What we offer

  • Market-leading double-match pension (up to 12% company contribution)
  • Annual performance bonus up to 6%
  • Company car (subject to business mileage)
  • Access to the Tusker salary sacrifice car scheme
  • 26 days holiday (plus statutory holidays)
  • 10x salary life assurance and income protection
  • Flexible benefits including healthcare, dental, and technology options
  • Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities

Inclusive recruitment

We're building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, championing diversity, and creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is valued for their unique contribution. We support reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and beyond.
