Job Description:
Orbital Engineering is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to serve as an Owner's Engineer representative on behalf of a Gas Utility Client in the Metro Detroit, MI area. This is a dedicated, client-facing hybrid position supporting the client across multiple compressor station locations.
The work schedule consists of approximately 3 days per week on-site at several compressor station locations in the Metro Detroit area, with the remainder working remotely. Increased on-site presence may be required during active construction phases.
This is an immediate-fill opportunity with an initial engagement of 6 months to 1 year, with strong likelihood of extension for the right candidate. The selected candidate will be an integral member of Orbital's Plant Projects team, working closely with in-house technical staff and project leadership to deliver exceptional service to the client.
Essential Functions
- Serve as Orbital's dedicated Owner's Engineer representative for a Gas Utility Client, acting in the client's best interest across engineering and project activities
- Develop and manage both engineering and construction Scopes of Work (SOW) for mechanical systems and equipment
- Support and disposition Requests for Information (RFIs) from contractors, vendors, and construction teams
- Provide technical support and act as a liaison between the Gas Utility Client and project stakeholders, including direct interfacing with contractors on-site
- Collaborate actively with Orbital's in-house engineering staff to leverage internal expertise, escalate technical challenges, and ensure the client receives the full depth of Orbital's capabilities
- Serve as a visible and trusted representative of Orbital in the field, helping to identify and communicate emerging client needs and project opportunities back to the broader team
- Complete all tasks in accordance with the Client's systems, standards, and project execution procedures
- Manage project progress relative to established plans, schedules, and budgets

Work Environment
- Hybrid role, with approximately 3 days/week on-site, 2 days/week remote; increased on-site presence expected during construction phases
- Primary worksite: Several compressor station locations, Metro Detroit, MI area
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university
- 5+ years of prior professional engineering experience
- Demonstrated ability to develop both engineering and construction Scopes of Work and support RFI processes
- Strong mechanical aptitude across various mechanical systems
- Working familiarity with structural and electrical engineering disciplines, with the ability to engage and communicate effectively across those areas
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across client, contractor, and internal team environments
- Ability to work on-site at compressor station locations in the Metro Detroit area
This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior Owner's Engineer or client-representative experience
- Familiarity with gas utility or similar regulated utility environments
- Experience in petrochemical, midstream oil and gas, or refinery sectors
