Job Description:
Bp is reimagining energy for people and our planet.
We provide heat, light and mobility to customers worldwide. We’re fundamentally redefining what we do, so we can reach net zero by 2050 or sooner. We also have a strong mission to help the whole world reach net zero too – working across our industry to improve people’s lives.
It’s a big value to us that the differences we see in the world around us are reflected in our workplace. Who you are is what counts, not where you’re from or how you live your life. A culture that values everyone benefits all of us. That’s why, to help our people thrive, we cultivate a truly diverse and inclusive environment.
About the role
The MED Low Carbon Finance Advisor provides finance support and challenge for biofuels and low-carbon activities in Spain and Portugal. The role connects regulatory obligations, commercial activity and financial outcomes, helping the business protect value, maintain a robust control environment and make well-informed decisions.
The role owns and coordinates core finance activities across period-end close, compliance-asset and obligation accounting, forecasting, performance reporting and assurance. It also supports the implementation of new regulations, business models, systems and operating-model changes, working across Finance, Product Supply, Trading, Operations, Regulatory & Compliance, Tax, Legal and digital teams.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
In this role you will
- Own and coordinate month-end and year-end finance activities for MED biofuels and low-carbon activities, including accruals, reconciliations, accounting entries, balance-sheet substantiation and management reporting.
- Maintain transparent and supportable valuation of biofuel certificates, compliance assets and obligations, with clear documentation of volumes, assumptions, methodologies and financial impacts.
- Produce and explain actuals, forecasts and plans, including key value drivers, risks and opportunities, integrated bio margin and movements versus plan or prior periods.
- Provide finance business partnering for Spain and Portugal compliance schemes, translating regulatory and operational developments into accounting, valuation, cash, P&L and control implications.
- Support commercial and operational decisions with robust financial analysis, scenario modelling and constructive challenge, including sourcing, blending, co-processing, certificate strategies and emerging low-carbon offers.
- Ensure the integrity and consistency of data used in finance and compliance reporting, investigating breaks across source systems, operational records and reporting tools and coordinating timely resolution.
- Design, operate and improve fit-for-purpose controls. Maintain clear evidence, support internal and external assurance and drive sustainable remediation of identified gaps or incidents.
- Support annual plan, forecasting cycles, long-term planning and performance reviews, with concise management insights and clear ownership of actions.
- Contribute to finance transformation and digitalisation initiatives (e.g. BIOVERSE), including requirements definition, process design, data controls, testing, migration, parallel runs and business readiness.
- Support the finance design and implementation of regulatory and business change, including RED III readiness, ETS2, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable hydrogen / RFNBO, co-processing and other emerging pathways as relevant to MED.
- Maintain efficient process documentation, roles and accountabilities, decision records and handovers, reducing key-person dependency and supporting a consistent European operating model.
- Build strong working relationships across countries and functions, acting as a trusted point of contact for MED low-carbon finance topics and raising material risks promptly.
Decision Support and Accountabilities:
- Provides finance input and challenge before material commercial, regulatory, operational or system decisions are implemented.
- Confirms that finance impacts, accounting treatment, valuation logic, controls and reporting requirements are understood and documented.
- Raises material data-quality, compliance, control, accounting or value risks and follows through until ownership and resolution are clear.
- Recommends process and control improvements and supports prioritisation based on risk, value and delivery impact.
KEY INTERFACES
Key interfaces:
- Internal: MED Product Supply and Biofuels Value Chain teams; Trading; Refining and Operations; Regulatory & Compliance; Finance Operations / ARC; Tax; Legal; Digital and Data; European Biofuels Finance; central performance and assurance teams.
- External, where relevant: auditors, assurance providers and other parties supporting finance or regulatory evidence, in coordination with the accountable business or compliance teams.
What you will need to be successful
Education and experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in finance, accounting, economics, business or a related field.
- Proven experience in finance, accounting, control, performance management or business partnering, preferably in a regulated, commodity, energy or supply-chain environment.
- Experience with period-end close, reconciliations, balance-sheet assurance, forecasting and management reporting.
- Experience analysing complex data and translating operational or regulatory topics into clear financial implications.
- Exposure to biofuels, low-carbon products, environmental markets, compliance obligations or certificate-based business models is an advantage.
Skills and capabilities:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail and sound business judgement.
- Ability to link operational activity, regulation, accounting and commercial value, and to communicate the conclusion in clear, simple language.
- Confident partner management across functions, countries and levels of seniority, including the ability to challenge constructively.
- Organised and delivery-focused, able to handle recurring deadlines alongside change initiatives and unplanned issues.
- Control approach and commitment to accurate, complete, traceable and audit-ready information.
- Strong Excel and data-analysis capability. Experience with SAP, Power BI, SAP Analytics Cloud or comparable reporting tools is beneficial.
- Interest in digitalisation, process simplification and data governance.
- Fluent written and spoken English. Spanish is required for a Spain-based role; Portuguese is beneficial for Iberian coverage.
What success looks like
- Financial reporting is accurate, timely and supported by clear reconciliations and evidence.
- Compliance assets, obligations and performance drivers are clear and understood by partners.
- Risks, control gaps and data issues are identified early, raised appropriately and resolved sustainably.
- Business decisions reflect the relevant accounting, control, cash and value implications.
- New regulations, systems and business models are implemented with clear finance requirements and stable handover into business-as-usual operations.
- Processes become simpler, more standardised and less dependent on manual work or individual knowledge.
