As a Manager, Merchandising - Japan you are responsible for the long-range vision and the creation of profitable, regional seasonal assortments and line plans across your assigned product categories in our product portfolio for Japan marketplace. You partner with our APAC regional merchandising, Merchandise Planning and Allocations (MP&A), Visual Merchandising and Commercial teams to align your product strategies with the overall merchandising strategy, and you support our company goals by focusing on consumer needs and brand opportunities to bring innovative solutions to market.


This role is based out of our Tokyo office and is open to hybrid remote work. Candidates must be eligible to work in Japan.



Meet Your Future Team:


The Merchant team is responsible for delivering regional, seasonal product assortments that support the overall product direction and regional business. In partnership with the Product Line Management (PLM) team & APAC regional merchandising team, Merchants drive company sales, gross margin, and inventory productivity goals, in both our wholesale and vertical channels. This high performing team works closely with the Commercialand Merchandise Planning and Allocations (MP&A) teams to create future seasonal line plans and to maximize in-season sales performance.





If you were a Manager, Merchandising - Japan now, here are some of the core activities you would be doing:



  • Creating successful short-term (1-2 year plan) merchandising strategies and long Term strategy plan (5 years plan) across all business units for your categories and product areas

  • Building and overseeing the successful execution of the merchandising strategy for your product categories

  • Mentoring, training and supporting the Associate Merchants and Merchants across Merchandising teams

  • Delivering on our 5-year brand vision by hitting regional sales, gross margin and inventory productivity goals through partnership with Commercial and MP&A teams

  • Partnering frequently with our Commercial leadership team on recommendations.

  • Partnering with the Planning team to create strategic seasonal selling plans, including plans to grow, diminish, hold, exit, and launch as well as sell-thru vs sell-in

  • Collaborating closely with the APAC regional merchandising & MP&A teams to ensure that regional needs are incorporated into the global line plan

  • Providing a regional product framework and assortment structure that guides merchant execution within retail, wholesale key accounts and digital channels to maximize sales, profit and global brand positioning.

  • Researching and analyzing the regional marketplace, identifying key consumer and market insights to inform the concept work and development of new products and the range

  • Developing and delivering product presentations for key calendar touchpoints that inspire and deliver the critical information to our internal stakeholders to ensure successful development of seasonal assets and plans

  • Maintaining effective partnerships with the Visual Merchandising, Design, Development, Brand Marketing teams to ensure seasonal strategies come to life in all channels and regions

  • Upholding Fair Labor Association’s Workplace Code of Conduct and Principles of Fair Labor and Responsible Sourcing, throughout the Arc’teryx supply chain

  • Exploring new product categories to round out the complete mountain kit for our guests

  • Maximizing the efficiency and profitability of the regional assortment across all points of ecommerce and retail distribution

  • Partnering to build out regional product calendars, stage gates and deliverables



Are you our next Manager, Merchandising?



  • You have 5-7+ years’ experience in Outdoor Retail or Customer Service, Merchandising, Product Development, Wholesale and/or Retail Buying roles

  • You have excellent knowledge of retail math concepts; sell through, calculating cost of goods, and the open to buy process

  • You are highly organized, able to effectively manage your time, and you possess strong analytical, presentation and communication skills.

  • You have strong leadership and teamwork skills, able to facilitate work across many different internal departments and external key accounts and vendors

  • You are a creative and strategic thinker, an ‘influencer’, a consensus builder, and excellent team player.

  • You excel at partnering across diverse teams and departments to establish consensus or drive solutions

  • You have a proven track record in developing and leading a team in the execution of a multi-year business strategy

  • You have an excellent understanding of the active apparel market within the outdoor industry, and the key outdoor activities we make product for

  • You have an excellent understanding of the design and development process

  • You are excellent in the use of Microsoft Office (especially PowerPoint and Excel)

  • You are willing and able to travel as required (trade shows, key dealer presentations, key vendor meetings, core consumer events, etc.)

  • You are proactive in identifying the root cause of issues and developing solutions

  • You are highly flexible and adaptable when faced with ambiguity

  • You effectively balance autonomy and collaboration

  • You inspire breakthrough thinking and continuous improvement

  • You seek the best (but sometimes not the easiest) solutions, with an unwavering commitment to do what is right

  • Your passion for your work is paralleled by your passion for getting outside and living it
