The Qualifications We Seek
- Tertiary degree in Accounting; CA/CPA qualification preferred
- At least 5 years of experience preparing New Zealand compliance accounts and tax returns within a Chartered Accountancy or business advisory services environment
- Strong practical knowledge of New Zealand tax and financial reporting requirements
- Current Xero certification or ability to obtain certification
- Proficiency in Xero, FYI, Microsoft 365, and accounting workflow and workpaper systems
- Strong account reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in compliance preparation and financial reporting
- Ability to manage multiple engagements, priorities, and statutory deadlines
- Ability to identify accounting and tax issues, investigate discrepancies, and escalate matters appropriately
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear file notes and concise technical explanations
- Ability to work collaboratively with reviewers, advisors, and accounting teams
- Commitment to client confidentiality, data security, professional standards, and established compliance procedures
Your Daily Tasks
Internal Service Delivery
- Deliver accurate and timely compliance work to support a consistent client experience across the group.
- Collaborate with the Senior Reviewer and responsible NZ Senior Client Advisor for each engagement.
- Record and refer all client questions, information requests, judgments, and issues to the responsible NZ Senior Client Advisor without direct client communication.
- Provide clear internal file notes and concise explanations to help the New Zealand team respond to clients efficiently.
- Protect client confidentiality, data security, and professional standards at all times.
Accounting & Compliance Preparation
- Prepare complete annual accounts, financial statements, tax reconciliations, returns, and supporting workpapers for allocated New Zealand clients.
- Manage compliance work across companies, partnerships, trusts, sole traders, investment portfolios, and related entity groups.
- Handle clients across varied industries and turnover levels, including complex structures, inter-entity transactions, and consolidated reporting where required.
- Complete year-end reconciliations, lead schedules, and standardized workpapers according to established quality and documentation requirements.
- Apply appropriate New Zealand accounting and tax treatments, investigate anomalies, and document conclusions clearly.
- Prepare files to a review-ready standard, resolve review points promptly, and meet agreed workflow and statutory deadlines.
- Identify incomplete records, unusual transactions, risks, and potential advisory matters and escalate them internally.
NZ Tax Compliance
- Maintain current knowledge of New Zealand income tax, GST, PAYE, FBT, provisional tax, withholding taxes, and relevant trust and company tax rules.
- Prepare accurate tax returns, calculations, and reconciliations in accordance with New Zealand legislation, Inland Revenue requirements, and established procedures.
- Identify technical tax issues and matters that require judgment, research, or advice and escalate them to the Senior Reviewer or NZ Senior Client Advisor.
- Prepare draft responses and supporting information for Inland Revenue matters for review and release by the New Zealand team.
- Support the achievement of filing targets and statutory deadlines.
Systems & File Management
- Use Xero, FYI, Microsoft 365, and relevant tax, workflow, and workpaper systems proficiently.
- Maintain complete electronic files, clear naming conventions, source-document links, and audit trails.
- Follow established information security, privacy, access-control, and data-handling requirements.
Team Support
- Support Manila team members as required to meet client needs.
- Mentor Client Advisory Services and Support team members to promote consistent accounting practices and policies across the practice.
General
- Record accurate timesheets daily and maintain current workflow status and completion notes.
- Manage allocated work, priorities, and deadlines in consultation with the Senior Reviewer.
- Participate in training, tax updates, quality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support consistent accounting and tax practices across the Manila and New Zealand teams.
Health, Safety & Wellbeing
- Model and follow established health and safety practices and procedures.
- Identify and support the management of workplace hazards within and beyond the immediate work area.
- Participate in and contribute to health, safety, and wellbeing initiatives.
Success Measures
- Deliver technically accurate, complete, well-documented, and review-ready compliance files.
- Apply correct New Zealand tax treatments and escalate technical matters promptly.
- Complete work within agreed budgets, workflow dates, and statutory deadlines.
- Minimize review points, address them promptly, and apply feedback to improve future work.
- Document and refer client queries and missing information to the NZ Senior Client Advisor without direct client contact.
- Maintain accurate and current timesheets and workflow records.
- Achieve the 85% productivity target, subject to agreed onboarding and training arrangements.
- Maintain required Xero certification and internal training.
- Follow confidentiality, information security, and established procedures consistently.
