Position Description

CGI is seeking an experienced Observability Platform Consultant to help improve the reliability, monitoring, and operational visibility of critical production services. In this hands-on role, you will work closely with platform and application development teams to implement observability solutions using Datadog, OpenTelemetry, AWS, Terraform, and Python. You will focus on identifying and resolving monitoring gaps, improving alerting and incident response, and developing reusable automation that enables teams to adopt consistent observability practices. This opportunity is ideal for a technical professional who enjoys solving complex production challenges, building developer tools, and improving platform reliability through automation and AI-assisted development.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity based in one of CGI's Atlantic Canada offices, including Halifax, NS; Moncton or Fredericton, NB; St. John's, NL; or Stratford, PEI. Candidates must be currently located in Atlantic Canada or willing to relocate. This role follows a hybrid work model requiring three days per week onsite.

Your future duties and responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and improve observability solutions using Datadog and OpenTelemetry across production applications and services.
  • Identify and resolve gaps in logging, metrics, distributed tracing, service metadata, SLOs, dashboards, and monitoring.
  • Develop actionable alerts and monitoring strategies that improve incident detection, troubleshooting, and response.
  • Build reusable observability solutions using Terraform modules, CI/CD components, templates, and automated validation checks.
  • Develop Python automation to scan application repositories, identify observability gaps, implement improvements, and validate results.
  • Enhance platform health dashboards by identifying missing reliability indicators and tracking improvements across services.
  • Collaborate with application developers and platform teams to implement observability best practices directly within service repositories.
  • Integrate observability capabilities into AWS environments, including CloudWatch, ECS, and containerized applications.
  • Leverage approved AI-assisted development tools to accelerate automation, implementation, testing, and documentation while maintaining appropriate review controls.
  • Promote self-service observability, operational reliability, and continuous improvement across platform services.

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

  • Strong hands-on experience implementing and supporting observability solutions in production environments.
  • Advanced experience with Datadog and OpenTelemetry, including logs, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, monitors, and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
  • Strong experience with AWS cloud services, including CloudWatch, ECS, and containerized application environments.
  • Hands-on expertise with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Strong Python development experience, including building automation scripts, reusable tools, and developer utilities.
  • Experience instrumenting, monitoring, and troubleshooting Python applications in production.
  • Experience integrating observability and automation into GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of application reliability, incident detection, root cause analysis, and monitoring best practices.
  • Ability to design reusable platform solutions rather than relying on manual monitoring configurations.
  • Understanding of telemetry cost optimization, metric cardinality, data retention, security, privacy, and access controls.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.

Assets

  • Experience supporting and instrumenting Java applications.
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools or agentic development workflows.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service automation.
  • Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and production reliability practices.
  • Experience developing automated observability compliance checks or service health reporting.
