Open Game Data Multi-Platform Telemetry Library - OSPO Fall Internship Program

Department Overview: The Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is looking to connect interns with meaningful open-source projects as part of a new cohort of the internship program in collaboration with Madison College. During the internship, students will join a mentored open source project, participate in an initial training session, and weekly check-ins with the Open Source Program Office, and learn crucial skills related to managing open source software projects and growing software user communities. Anticipated Start Date: 9/14/2026 Anticipated End Date (If Applicable): 11/20/2026 Remote Work Eligibility Detail: Partially Remote Anticipated Hours Per Week: Minimum: 10 Maximum: 15 Schedule: Internship work schedules will be established in collaboration with the project mentors, with a general expected commitment of 10-15 hours/week. In addition to the work schedule established with the project lead, interns will participate in a weekly group session with the OSPO for check-ins, trainings, and guest speakers. Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum: Minimum: $15.00 Maximum: $17.00 Number of Positions: 1 Qualifications: UW-Madison and Madison College undergraduate and graduate students with applicable backgrounds in any field are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in a degree program during the calendar year with at least one semester remaining after the internship’s conclusion. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Prospective interns should have experience developing software in a team-based environment where they must navigate and understand unfamiliar codebases. They should have strong skills in C# and JavaScript. While they will not directly develop games, they should have a strong background in game engines, particularly Unity, sufficient to modify an existing codebase with library calls. Interns should also have experience with GitHub for source control; experience with GitHub's automation tools (GitHub Actions) is preferred but not required. Position Summary/Job Duties: Open Game Data is an open research infrastructure that serves researchers and game developers, providing a sustainable technical infrastructure for collection and sharing of game telemetry data, as well as downstream data analysis. It is primarily developed by Field Day Lab, which is part of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research within the School of Education. After several years of development within Field Day, we are actively working to build up a community of game studios and researchers, who use shared standards and tools to advance the field of video games for education. Our immediate goals are centered on improving the tools and documentation for onboarding new studios and game producers into the organization, as well as integrating their games with our infrastructure. Multi-Platform Telemetry Library: prospective interns for this project will code and testing to a core tool in the Open Game Data infrastructure. In particular, they will implement a newly-developed logging standard within existing Unity game engine and JavaScript logging libraries. They will test their implementations within existing games, ensuring upgrading to the new standard is consistent and straightforward. Interns will work closely with OGD's engineering team, ensuring that the telemetry libraries communicate efficiently and correctly with backend data logging infrastructure. Finally, interns will expand on the existing libraries by identifying additional candidate game engines, and implementing the logging API for those platforms. Physical Demands: Interns are expected to be able to sit for extended periods. Specific physical demands will be discussed with mentors during the interview process.
