The Role As an Operational Technology Field Technician, you’ll be at the frontline of our control systems, telemetry, and communications infrastructure. You will be commissioning, maintaining and improving the Operational Technology (OT) assets that support water, sewerage, and treatment plant operations across our network. This is a highly technical, field-based role where no two days are the same. You’ll be helping to commission new sites in the field, verifying that consistent and accurate data is being captured, and ensuring the ongoing reliability of our assets. You will be contributing towards the critical assets that provide services to our customers and environment in a safe and reliable manner. Your Key Responsibilities Maintain and improve Operational Technology assets and systems, including RTUs, PLCs, telemetry networks, and SCADA Provide reactive fault resolution and proactive maintenance of OT field assets Participate in a 24/7 rotating on-call roster for emergency response P erform root cause analysis on recurring system issues and implement long-term fixes Manage OT communications networks including digital radio and 4G/broadband systems Translate business requirements into functional OT designs and technical specifications Program, configure, and support PLCs, RTUs, SCADA systems and associated infrastructure support commissioning of new OT infrastructure ensuring compliance with YVW standards Monitor system performance and identify opportunities for optimisation and improvement Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, standards development, and asset reliability programs Ensure OT systems are secure, compliant, and aligned with cybersecurity requirements What we’re Looking for Experience in industrial control and telemetry systems (PLC/RTU programming and configuration) Understanding of electrical control systems, wiring, and installation. Sound understanding and experience in configuration and programming of PLC, RTU, Radio, Modems. Working knowledge of SCADA systems and Asset Management Ability to diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and implement fixes Strong documentation and technical writing skills A collaborative mindset with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills A commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement Current Victorian Driver’s Licence Desirable Experience Tertiary qualification in Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering or a related discipline (preferred but not essential) Experience with supporting distributed assets across a Utilities network Exposure to asset management systems such as Maximo, including asset attributes, work order management, inventory management Experience using code repository and version control tools (e.g. Octoplant, VersionDog) Technical Expertise Strong experience in RTU and PLC programming and configuration, including: SCADAPack (E-Series) and Brodersen RTUs GE PLCs (90-30 and RX3i) Lower-power RTU devices (eg. 37South,Metasphere, Aquatec) Communications & Systems Experience configuring industrial communications networks, including: - Digital radio systems (eg. Trio, Aprisa) - 4G/IoT modems (eg. Garderos) Working knowledge of SCADA systems, ideally GeoSCADA Expert (ClearSCADA) Exposure to Operational Historian platforms such as OSI PI Additional Capabilities Understanding of cybersecurity principles within OT environments Experience developing technical standards, documentation, and programming frameworks Ability to identify system improvements and develop technical work packages Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences Working knowledge of OHS legislation and compliance requirements To view the full position description, click HERE .
