Criminal Defense Paralegal
Remote | Full-Time
RecLatam is hiring on behalf of a U.S.-based law firm seeking an experienced and highly organized Criminal Defense Paralegal to provide comprehensive case-management and litigation support to its attorneys.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting criminal matters from intake through case resolution and will be comfortable managing court filings, calendars, discovery, client communications, records requests, and attorney deadlines. This position requires strong judgment, proactive case management, excellent communication skills, and the ability to anticipate attorney and case needs.
Key Responsibilities
Case Management & Court Filings
- Prepare and file initial motions and other required documents for new matters.
- Draft and file motions as directed by attorneys.
- Monitor case progress and maintain accurate case information.
- File motions to withdraw and other closing documents at the conclusion of matters, as applicable.
- Maintain and update attorney client/case lists.
- Perform additional case-related assignments as requested by attorneys.
Client Communication
- Conduct introductory calls with new clients and explain the general case process and next steps.
- Coordinate and schedule client appointments.
- Communicate with clients regarding case status, upcoming court dates, hearing updates, and other case developments.
- Call, email, or text clients regarding upcoming hearings and advise them whether their appearance is required based on attorney instructions.
- Screen client calls and gather relevant information for attorneys to help resolve client questions and concerns.
Calendar & Deadline Management
- Calendar all court hearings, appointments, and relevant case deadlines.
- Regularly review attorney calendars and plan ahead for upcoming hearings and obligations.
- Identify scheduling conflicts and prepare or file appropriate motions, as directed, to help manage the attorney's calendar.
- Proactively track deadlines and upcoming case requirements.
Discovery & Investigation Support
- Review discovery materials for completeness and identify potential supplemental discovery that should be requested.
- Organize, save, and maintain discovery electronically and in physical files when required.
- Coordinate and schedule defense interviews.
- Review CI-related matters for pending charges.
- Prepare and manage records requests for CI and MTSA matters and other cases as required.
Document & File Management
- Scan, save, organize, and maintain client and case documents.
- Process and electronically file incoming faxes and correspondence.
- Maintain accurate electronic and physical case files.
- Ensure discovery and other case materials are properly saved, printed, and organized according to firm procedures.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Criminal Defense Paralegal or in a substantially similar legal support role is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with a U.S. law firm and familiarity with U.S. court procedures.
- Experience with court filings, legal calendaring, discovery, and client communication.
- Strong organizational and case-management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple active matters simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to communicate professionally and empathetically with clients.
- Comfortable working with case-management software, electronic filing systems, and digital document-management platforms.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize deadlines, and anticipate attorney needs.
- High level of professionalism and discretion when handling confidential information.
