Agency Dept of Justice Division DOJ Legal Services Job Classification Title Paralegal III (S) Position Number 65036343 Grade LG05 About Us The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. Description of Work Recruitment Range: $63,367 to $67,388 IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting closes at 11:59:59 PM the night BEFORE the End Date listed. This Public Safety Paralegal III position will provide paraprofessional litigation support services to the attorneys assigned to the Public Safety Section, which represents the Department of Adult Corrections, Department of Public Safety, State Highway Patrol, and Statute Bureau of Investigation in all types of litigation. This position shares responsibility with other paralegal positions for providing all litigation support services provided to these attorneys, assigns work tasks to the Section’s assistants, and such other duties as deemed necessary. As a Paralegal III, the candidate must be familiar with all practices and procedures to support litigation in state courts and federal courts, such as filing, legal research, file management, communications with clients, opposing counsel, and court staff, preparation of legal documents, such as pleadings, discovery, and motions, including drafting such documents for attorney review. The position requires extreme attention to detail, characterized by precision and accuracy. Strong reliance is placed upon the work-product of this position to ensure that work is accomplished effectively and efficiently without the need for significant revisions. This is a hybrid remote position, requiring a combination of in-office and remote work. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences 1. 5 years of progressive civil litigation experience preferred. 2. Experience providing paralegal supporting for litigation in federal court, strongly preferred. 3. Demonstrated history of managing heavy caseload while maintaining high standards and meeting deadlines, preferred. 4. Legal research and drafting of legal documents preferred. Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training and three years of experience as a paralegal; or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and seven years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
