Description

The American Immigration Council (the Council) is seeking a remote part-time research assistant to support a study on the childcare experiences of immigrant families in the New York City area. The project examines how immigrant families find, afford, and manage childcare, and the role childcare plays in their work and family lives.

About the Council

The American Immigration Council works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring. The Council brings together individuals adept at solving problems and employs four coordinated approaches to advance change—litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-person interviews and administer surveys with immigrant families across the New York City area.
  • Assist with participant recruitment and scheduling for interviews and surveys.
  • Take notes, compile survey responses, summarize interviews, and maintain organized and confidential research records.
  • Provide additional research and administrative support as needed throughout the project.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in both Arabic and English (speaking and reading).
  • Based in the New York City area and available to work on site to conduct interviews and surveys.
  • Flexible schedule, including availability for some evenings and weekends, as interviews are scheduled around participants' availability.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable talking with people, listening carefully, and following research protocols.
  • Reliable, organized, and committed to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with immigrant communities in New York City is preferred.

No prior research experience is required. Training will be provided in interviewing techniques, survey administration, and research ethics.

Students and recent graduates in sociology, social work, public health, Latino studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply, as are community members with the language skills and an interest in the community-based research. This position is ideal for individuals interested in research on immigrant communities, education, social services, or public policy.

Position Details

  • Part-time, approximately 10-20 hours per week
  • Compensation: $25/hour
  • Start date: Late October 2026
  • Expected duration: Through Fall 2027

How to Apply

Please submit a brief statement describing your interest in the position, your Arabic-language background, and your general availability, along with a résumé. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
