Job Role
We're looking for a Payroll Manager to join our People Solutions team, with remote working available. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to take ownership of a portfolio of outsourced payroll clients, delivering a comprehensive end-to-end payroll service while supporting business growth and maintaining exceptional customer satisfaction.
As our Payroll Manager, you'll be responsible for managing the full payroll lifecycle for multiple SME clients, including payroll setup, processing, HMRC submissions, pension administration, reporting, reconciliations, year-end activities, and payroll compliance. You'll also play a key role in payroll audits, implementations, health checks, and business development activities. Sage 50 knowledge would be an advantage.
You'll work closely with clients, pension providers, HMRC, and internal stakeholders to ensure payroll services are delivered accurately, compliantly, and on time. Acting as a trusted payroll adviser, you'll provide expert guidance on payroll legislation, pensions, tax, and best practice while building strong long-term relationships with clients.
We're looking for a highly organised and technically capable payroll professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You'll be comfortable managing multiple payrolls and deadlines, explaining complex payroll matters to clients, and identifying opportunities to improve services and support wider business growth.
In return for your dedication, knowledge, and commitment, we're offering a competitive salary of £47,500 to £52,500 per annum with a benefits package including:
• 25 days annual leave + Bank Holidays + Birthday Day off (with the opportunity to buy additional days)
• 2 Volunteer Days
• Pension - 5% Employee / 5% Employer
• Healthcare Cash Plan, including 3x salary life assurance
• Annual salary review
• Refer a friend scheme
• Free access to Benefit Hub, including retail discounts, cycle to work scheme, and additional voluntary benefits
Location: Remote
Hours: Full Time, 37 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Closing Date: 28 October 2026
Key Responsibilities
• Manage end-to-end processing of multiple client payrolls, ensuring accuracy and compliance with agreed deadlines.
• Set up new client payrolls, including employee records, pay elements, pensions, tax settings, and payroll calendars.
• Process starters, leavers, salary changes, overtime, commissions, statutory payments, deductions, expenses, and other payroll adjustments.
• Complete RTI submissions, manage HMRC notices, reconcile payroll liabilities, and deliver year-end activities including P60s and associated reporting.
• Administer workplace pensions and auto-enrolment schemes, including enrolment assessments, submissions, reconciliations, and compliance requirements.
• Act as the primary payroll contact for a portfolio of SME clients, providing expert advice and support on payroll-related matters.
• Support payroll implementations, transitions, migrations, audits, health checks, and payroll improvement projects.
• Identify opportunities to enhance payroll services and support wider HR and business service offerings.
• Maintain high standards of payroll compliance, data security, audit trails, and quality assurance processes.
• Work collaboratively with internal HR, Finance, Recruitment, and IT teams to support client requirements and service excellence.
Skills and Experience
• Significant experience in UK payroll processing, ideally within an outsourced payroll bureau, payroll provider, accountancy practice, or managed services environment.
• Proven experience processing payrolls from start to finish while managing multiple clients and competing deadlines.
• Strong technical knowledge of PAYE, National Insurance, RTI, statutory payments, workplace pensions, auto-enrolment, and payroll legislation.
• Experience setting up and implementing new payrolls, including pension scheme administration and payroll migrations.
• Strong payroll reconciliation, problem-solving, and analytical skills with keen attention to detail.
• Excellent client-facing communication skills with the ability to explain technical payroll matters clearly and professionally.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
• Commercial awareness and confidence supporting client discussions, proposals, and service development opportunities.
• CIPP qualification or equivalent would be advantageous.
• Experience delivering payroll audits, health checks, implementations, or system migrations would be beneficial.
