PCB Designer – Xpedition Job Description The experienced PCB Designer will support an advanced satellite constellation program by leading the PCB layout and design of multiple spacecraft subsystems. This role spans the full product lifecycle, from initial system definition through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, test, and production. The position requires deep expertise in PCB layout using Mentor Xpedition, strong understanding of high-speed and high-current designs, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams. Responsibilities Participate in the definition, design, and implementation of multiple spacecraft subsystems, focusing on PCB layout and design. Create, modify, and optimize PCB layouts using Mentor Xpedition and other industry-standard PCB design tools. Apply best practices in PCB design, assembly, test, and fabrication to ensure robust, manufacturable boards. Design and review high-speed digital and high-current density circuits to meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements. Conduct or support signal integrity and power integrity considerations during PCB design, leveraging appropriate analysis tools when needed. Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers to ensure PCB designs meet overall system requirements. Manage multiple PCB design projects in parallel, balancing priorities and timelines effectively. Coordinate and oversee work performed by third-party PCB layout services, ensuring quality and adherence to design standards. Participate in schematic reviews and design reviews, providing technical feedback and recommendations for improvement. Support design-for-manufacturing activities and incorporate manufacturability requirements into PCB layouts. Test and debug PCB assemblies using standard electronics lab equipment, identifying and resolving design or implementation issues. Contribute to the development and refinement of PCB design processes, standards, and documentation. Provide technical guidance and support to other PCB design engineers and cross-functional team members as needed. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. 7+ years of experience in PCB layout design using industry-standard PCB design suites. Recent, hands-on experience using Mentor Xpedition for PCB layout. 5+ years of experience designing high-speed circuits. Experience with high current density PCB designs. Strong knowledge of PCB layout principles, including component placement, routing, stack-up definition, and design rule application. Experience with PCB design, assembly, test, and fabrication processes. Ability to manage multiple PCB design projects in parallel. Experience managing and coordinating third-party PCB layout services. Experience testing and debugging boards using standard electronics lab equipment (such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters). Proficiency with schematic capture and integration of schematics into PCB layout workflows. Strong understanding of signal integrity and power integrity fundamentals in PCB design. Ability to work effectively with cross-functional technical teams and communicate design intent clearly. Additional Skills & Qualifications 10+ years of experience in PCB layout design using industry-standard PCB design suites. Experience designing and developing PCBs for deployment in space environments. Knowledge of PCB failure modes and reliability considerations in extreme environments. Experience serving as a technical lead for small teams of PCB design engineers. Experience developing IPC Class 2 and Class 3 boards. Familiarity with HyperLynx or similar analysis tools for electrical design rule checking, signal integrity, power integrity, and electromagnetic modeling. Understanding of electrical discharge machining (EDM) processes and their relevance to electronic or mechanical design interfaces. Experience with high-speed digital design techniques and constraints. Experience with electrical design and schematic capture using Mentor Xpedition or related toolchains. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to contribute constructively in schematic and design reviews. Work Environment This is a remote position that allows you to perform your work from a home or off-site office environment. You will collaborate with distributed cross-functional teams using digital communication and collaboration tools. Work typically involves extensive use of PCB design software, schematic capture tools, and electronic documentation systems. Occasional access to electronics lab equipment may be required for board test and debug, which may be coordinated through remote or on-site lab resources depending on project needs.
