Volunteer Role: Peer Review Panel Member (Professional Conduct Committee)
Location: Remote
Term of Appointment: Three years
Start Date: January 2027
Remuneration: Voluntary with reasonable expenses reimbursed
Company Overview
Ciarb is a global professional membership body committed to promoting effective dispute resolution and its benefits to society and economies worldwide. We champion arbitration, mediation and adjudication, set robust ethical standards, and provide qualifications, learning, research, resources, events, mentoring and networking opportunities.
In 2024, Ciarb revised its Disciplinary Rules to:
streamline the disciplinary process;
separate investigations from disciplinary decision-making and sanctions; and
reserve the Disciplinary Tribunal for the most serious misconduct, with the Professional Conduct Committee considering lesser sanctions.
We are now seeking Peer Review Panel Members from across Ciarb’s global regions: the UK, Europe, East Asia, Australia, the Americas, Ireland, Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.
About the Role
The Peer Review Panel provides impartial expertise and assists Ciarb staff or the Board with matters within the Panel’s remit. This may include complaints and investigations, the preparation of reports, and issues relating to Ciarb’s Presidential panels or panel membership.
Panel Members will contribute directly to upholding professional standards and supporting a fair, consistent and effective disciplinary process. The role also provides an opportunity to strengthen skills in evidence evaluation, analysis and structured decision-making while working with experienced peers from Ciarb’s global network.
Key Responsibilities
Peer Review Panel Members may be required to:
consider complaints of alleged misconduct made against Ciarb members in accordance with Ciarb’s Disciplinary Rules;
review documents and other evidence;
establish the relevant facts;
work with fellow Panel Members to categorise complaints;
prepare clear and evidence-based reports; and
advise or assist Ciarb staff and/or its Board on matters requiring impartial expertise.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
hold professional membership of Ciarb; and
not be members of the Professional Conduct Committee, Disciplinary Tribunal or Appeals Tribunal.
The Panel will have global representation. Appointments will be subject to the relevant governance approvals, including consideration by the Professional Conduct Committee and Nominations Committee, and final approval by the Board of Trustees.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Applicants should demonstrate:
a commitment to Ciarb’s work, values and vision, and to advancing alternative dispute resolution globally;
experience in an investigative, disciplinary or committee-based role;
the ability to interpret legal advice and apply Ciarb’s procedures appropriately;
experience of participating in meetings and collective decision-making;
a good level of IT proficiency;
a strong understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements; and
a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Personal Skills and Attributes
Successful applicants will be able to:
analyse complex information and make informed, independent and robust decisions;
communicate clearly and challenge viewpoints constructively;
listen effectively, consider different perspectives and draw on the expertise of others;
work collaboratively with fellow Panel Members and Ciarb’s executive team;
contribute positively to improvements and change;
demonstrate an inclusive, consultative, collegiate and supportive approach;
recognise and respond to the needs of Ciarb’s diverse professional and global communities; and
commit the time and effort required to fulfil the role.
Expected Time Commitment
The time commitment will vary according to the number and complexity of matters referred to the Panel. Members may not be called upon for extended periods.
When assigned a complaint, Panel Members will typically provide ad hoc input over approximately two to four weeks. This will include reviewing documentation and evidence and meeting with fellow Panel Members to establish the facts and categorise the complaint.
Remuneration and Expenses
This is a voluntary, non-remunerated role. Expenses reasonably incurred while carrying out the role will be reimbursed in accordance with Ciarb’s Expenses Policy.
