Job Title: Pharmacy Technician Job Description This Pharmacy Technician role focuses on tracking and triaging coverage determination requests for prior authorizations for Medicare Part D recipients. You will support the pharmacy benefit management process by reviewing requests, obtaining necessary clinical information, and ensuring timely and accurate decisions are documented and communicated to providers and members. Responsibilities Track and triage all coverage determination requests submitted by providers for prior authorizations and Medicare Part D recipients. Review coverage determination requests and determine when a pharmacist’s clinical review is required. Obtain verbal authorizations from prescribers and request detailed clinical information to support coverage decisions. Approve coverage determination requests based on clearly defined criteria and established guidelines. Enter and accurately document coverage determination decisions in the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) system. Notify providers and members of coverage determination decisions in a timely and professional manner. Respond to client inquiries regarding authorization approvals and the PBM online system, ensuring clear and accurate information. Refer coverage determination requests for specialty drugs to the appropriate delegated vendor or client for processing. Contact providers to obtain additional information needed to complete coverage determination reviews. Communicate coverage determination outcomes to physicians, providers, and members with clarity and professionalism. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. At least 1 year of experience in a retail, hospital, or mail order pharmacy setting. Current state Pharmacy Technician license. Experience handling prior authorization or coverage determination processes in a pharmacy or PBM environment. Ability to track, triage, and prioritize multiple coverage determination requests efficiently. Strong attention to detail when entering and documenting decisions in PBM or pharmacy systems. Clear and professional verbal communication skills for obtaining authorizations and clinical information from prescribers. Ability to interpret and apply defined criteria to approve coverage determination requests. Customer service skills to respond effectively to client inquiries regarding authorization approvals. Additional Skills & Qualifications National Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT) preferred. Familiarity with Medicare Part D coverage and prior authorization requirements. Experience working with pharmacy benefit management (PBM) systems or similar healthcare software. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with high volumes of authorization requests. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively. Ability to collaborate with pharmacists, providers, and other healthcare professionals to support coverage decisions. Work Environment This role operates within a structured pharmacy benefit management or pharmacy support environment, where you handle a high volume of coverage determination and prior authorization requests for Medicare Part D recipients. You will work extensively with PBM systems and other pharmacy-related software to document and process decisions. The position typically follows standard business hours, with potential variation based on operational needs. You will spend most of the day working at a computer and on the phone, communicating with providers, prescribers, and members in a professional office or call-center style setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Tempe, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
