You want to play a part in making NSW a better place to work, live and travel.

You're all about the detail and this role will allow you to drive evidence-based decision making to optimise systems and efficiency, not just for the business but for our customers too. It's data and research with impact you can see.

In this role, you'll:

Working as part of a team creating and delivering small area demographic projections, this role will see you supporting the collection, analysis, and interpretation of demographic, land use and economic data to inform evidence based transport planning and modelling activities.

You will contribute to the development and maintenance of assumptions underpinning the travel zone projections model, assist with research into population, workforce, employment, students and housing trends, and help translate complex technical inputs into clear, accessible advice—building on your capability across planning, modelling and stakeholder informed decision making.

Primary Purpose of the Role

This role sits within the Place Forecasting Team in Transport Modelling and will support work across the Place Forecasting and Model Planning Teams within the Transport Modelling Function. Key responsibilities include coordinating the annual update of the Transport Enabled Network Assumptions (TENAs), updating the existing Travel Zone Projections (TZP) Power BI and Tableau dashboards and developing new dashboards as required.

About you

You will collect, prepare, and analyse population, workforce, employment and demographic data to support forecasting and modelling activities and ensure that data is of appropriate quality for input to the Travel Zone Projections model and subsequently the strategic transport models. You will undertake research into Travel Zone projections model inputs, assumptions and trends (e.g. housing, industry, economic factors), ensuring robustness and appropriateness of the assumptions underpinning the travel zone projections.

Your analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively, will see you excel in producing high quality data, supporting modelling processes and managing multiple tasks simultaneously, helping to deliver defensible, evidence-based outputs that inform strategic transport decisions.

You’re recognised as a capable and reliable analyst, skilled at interpreting quantitative data, communicating insights in plain language and supporting quality assurance processes, experienced in working with large scale data sets, analytical and mapping tools (ArcGIS/QGIS); also experienced in supporting stakeholders with planning and forecasting outcomes in a public sector or consulting environment. Knowledge of Python and R script is desirable.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Collect, manipulate, analyse and manage geospatial and other complex datasets using tools such as ArcGIS Pro and QGIS to support transport planning and modelling activities.
  • Develop and maintain data visualisations and dashboards using Power BI and Tableau
  • Work collaboratively across teams to collect, validate and maintain network assumptions and other key inputs required for transport models.
  • Analyse and interpret large and complex datasets, identifying key trends, issues and insights relevant to transport planning and modelling.
  • Undertake data validation and quality assurance to ensure data and modelling inputs are accurate, consistent and fit for purpose.
  • Support the development and maintenance of transport modelling assumptions, inputs and datasets, ensuring they are appropriately documented and understood.
  • Prepare reports, presentations and other communication materials that translate technical information and analysis into clear insights for technical and non-technical audiences.

Key challenges:

  • Coordinating multiple stakeholders and managing different requirements and expectations during the TENAs annual update process.
  • Managing competing demands and priorities across various workstreams.

Essential requirements:

  • Experience in manipulating and using geospatial data using industry-standard tools such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
  • Experience in developing data visualisations and dashboards using Power BI and Tableau
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams to collect and maintain network assumptions for transport models.
  • Experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences through reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, validate and manage data to ensure quality, accuracy and fitness for purpose.
  • Understanding of the assumptions, inputs and data requirements underpinning transport planning and modelling activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret large, complex datasets, identifying key trends and insights.
