Job Description

Our Client seeks an experienced Plumbing / Fire Protection Engineer to lead the design of new construction projects from concept through completion. In this role, you will independently manage projects, define building systems, and coordinate all phases of design while collaborating closely with a broader production team. You will balance hands-on design responsibilities with production work, contribute to high-quality deliverables, and support a culture of mentorship, responsiveness, and strong client service across a diverse portfolio of multifamily, mixed-use, affordable housing, and retail projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead plumbing and fire protection design for new building projects from initial kickoff through project completion.
• Coordinate and run project kickoff meetings, clearly defining overall building systems and project expectations.
• Request, review, and manage all required project documentation to ensure accurate and complete design information.
• Develop designs through all project phases, including Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), Construction Documents (CDs), and Construction Administration (CA).
• Prepare detailed plumbing and fire protection drawings and models using REVIT, ensuring accuracy and coordination with other disciplines.
• Support Construction Administration activities, including conducting site visits and addressing field conditions and RFIs.
• Collaborate with a larger production team while owning a defined portion of the work and maintaining accountability for quality and schedule.
• Work independently with minimal oversight, proactively identifying and resolving design and coordination issues.
• Balance higher-level design responsibilities with junior- to mid-level production tasks to support project delivery.
• Coordinate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate plumbing and fire protection systems into overall building design.
• Contribute to projects primarily in multifamily, mixed-use, affordable housing, and retail sectors, with a focus on new construction.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and external clients to maintain strong relationships and deliver excellent customer service.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in plumbing and fire protection engineering.
• Proven experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems for new construction projects.
• Strong proficiency in REVIT for plumbing and fire protection design and documentation.
• Experience working through all project phases, including Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), Construction Documents (CDs), and Construction Administration (CA).
• Ability to lead projects independently from kickoff through completion with minimal oversight.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating building systems and managing project documentation.
• Background in multifamily and mixed-use projects, including affordable housing and retail developments.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external clients.
• Ability to balance design responsibilities with junior- to mid-level production work.
• Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary MEP or building design team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with AutoCAD for design and documentation of plumbing and fire protection systems.
• Broad exposure to new construction projects in urban environments, including work across multiple boroughs and the broader tri-state area.
• Experience collaborating with prominent architecture and design firms on complex building projects.
• Background as an MEP or mechanical engineer with a focus on plumbing and fire protection systems.
• Interest in mentoring and knowledge sharing within a collaborative team environment.
• Customer-service mindset with a focus on responsiveness and building long-term client relationships.

Work Environment

This role offers a hybrid work schedule, combining in-office and remote work to support flexibility and collaboration. The standard schedule includes approximately two days per week in a professional office environment and three days working from home, with typical office hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will join a close-knit plumbing and fire protection team of about eight people within a larger office of over forty professionals, providing opportunities for collaboration and exposure to a variety of projects and disciplines. Projects are primarily located within the five boroughs, with additional work across the broader tri-state area, giving you significant exposure to multiple project types and clients. The team emphasizes mentorship, responsiveness, and strong client service, creating a supportive environment where engineers can grow their technical skills and take ownership of meaningful project work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of New York, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $110000.00 - $140000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
