Principal Scientist – Computational Biology

Therapeutic area: Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Diseases

South Germany - Hybrid working 2/3 days on site per week

KEMIO are supporting a pharmaceutical organisation seeking a Principal Scientist to advance its research into cardio-renal-metabolic diseases. You’ll translate complex human biological and clinical data into insights that inform target discovery, biomarker strategies, patient stratification and early drug development.

Working alongside computational scientists, disease specialists and translational research teams, you’ll combine hands-on analytical expertise with scientific leadership to guide research decisions.

The role:

  • Design and apply computational approaches to analyse and integrate multi-omics, spatial transcriptomics, imaging, clinical and real-world data.
  • Lead and contribute to projects spanning disease understanding, target identification and validation, biomarker discovery and patient stratification.
  • Develop therapeutic hypotheses grounded in human biology.
  • Lead computational workstreams, defining analytical strategies, prioritising data sources and translating results into clear recommendations.
  • Collaborate with therapeutic area, experimental medicine and wider research teams to ensure computational findings inform project decisions.
  • Communicate analytical approaches, results and recommendations to multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Develop innovative methods, analytical frameworks and reusable workflows that strengthen data-driven drug discovery.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology or a related discipline, followed by several years of professional experience.
  • Experience applying computational biology to drug discovery or translational research, within pharmaceuticals or biotechnology.
  • Strong expertise in analysing complex biological datasets, with experience in areas such as multi-omics integration, spatial transcriptomics, biomarker discovery, patient stratification, disease biology, target identification.
  • Proficiency in R or Python, alongside practical experience with reproducible research, version control, scalable analytical pipelines and FAIR data principles.
  • The ability to combine scientific depth with strategic thinking and guide collaborative research projects.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of cardio-renal-metabolic diseases is not a must have but would be an advantage.

This role offers the chance to influence research from disease understanding through to early development, helping turn complex data into meaningful therapeutic insights. You’ll contribute both scientific direction and hands-on expertise within a multidisciplinary research environment.
