Principal Engineer

We're working with an Australian technology company building a next-generation data platform and looking for a hands-on Principal Engineer to join their senior engineering team.
You'll remain deeply technical, working across distributed query execution, optimisation and large-scale enterprise deployments.
The Role
You'll split your time between building the product and working on complex customer implementations.
You'll be involved in:
- Distributed query execution and optimisation
- Apache Spark and JVM engineering
- Query federation and pushdown
- Performance and scalability
- Connector frameworks
- Kubernetes and enterprise deployments
- Complex customer architecture and integration challenges
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years software engineering experience
- Strong distributed systems background
- Deep Apache Spark experience, ideally internals and query planning
- Strong JVM engineering experience
- Scala, Java or Kotlin
- SQL and query performance expertise
- Data platform or query engine experience
- Kubernetes, Linux and containerised environments
- Comfortable working directly with customers and technical stakeholders
Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, Cloudera, Palantir, Starburst, Dremio, Trino or similar would be highly valuable.
