Job Summary:
University Information Technology is seeking a Principal Enterprise Architect. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

As a senior technologist and member of the Enterprise Architecture (EA) team reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Principal Enterprise Architect leads Oregon State University’s enterprise architecture practice by shaping strategy, advancing standards, and ensuring the alignment of technology investments with institutional priorities. This position serves as the most senior technical EA voice within EA, providing expert guidance across all domains while directly supervising Enterprise Architects.
This role focuses on developing, documenting, and operationalizing enterprise IT standards, ensuring that technology solutions align with institutional priorities, architectural principles, and governance expectations. Working in close coordination with other enterprise architects and domain architects, this position partners with business and IT stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable, secure, and well-architected solutions.
The Principal Enterprise Architect leads the development and stewardship of OSU’s EA program, working at the intersection of business strategy and technology execution. This role recommends enterprise architecture standards based on EA best practices, participates in the Enterprise Architecture Review Board (EARB), develops and manages the EA team’s goals and professional growth, and ensures the EA practice is designed to translate institutional strategy into a well-architected, efficient, and outcome-driven technology operating model.

Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Architecture Program Management
- Maintains the EA practice at the intersection of strategy, business, and IT; ensures the EA practice is designed and enabled to formulate, translate, and execute business strategy in the IT domain
- Works with university leaders and stakeholders to identify key drivers and targeted business outcomes to derive business context for the enterprise architecture
- Identifies institutional requirements for the resources, structures, and cultural changes necessary to support the enterprise architecture
- Translates institutional strategy and, with the CTO, works with IT leaders to build the right EA organizational design to drive business outcomes
- Manages the Enterprise Architecture Team, ensuring team members have clear goals and expectations and have a professional development plan
- Ensures the EA organizational design process leads to a more efficient and effective business and IT operating model that aligns to university strategy and delivers significantly improved results in customer service, internal operations, and EA resource empowerment
- Assesses enterprise technology/architectural current state and develops approaches that enable rapid simplification of the OSU IT ecosystem
- Recommends enterprise architectural standards based on EA best practices and industry frameworks; communicates solution and architecture requirements to operational teams across all domains
- Develops enterprise architectural metrics and reports for the executive team and IT management; addresses enterprise architectural concerns, ideas, and suggestions
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Directly supervises Enterprise Architects, including planning and assigning work, approving deliverables, providing coaching and professional development guidance
- Conducts and signs performance evaluations, sets clear performance expectations, and takes disciplinary or corrective action when warranted
- Participates in hiring and onboarding of EA team members; effectively recommends hiring decisions to the CTO
- Responds to and resolves team concerns, grievances, and interpersonal issues in coordination with HR partners
- Fosters a collaborative, high-performing team culture aligned with UIT’s DEIA and professional excellence commitments
Enterprise Architecture Standards & Governance
- Leads the development, documentation, and lifecycle management of enterprise architecture artifacts including standards recommendations, reference architectures, and solution patterns based on EA best practices
- Participates in the Enterprise Architecture Review Board (EARB); reviews project and program architectures for alignment with enterprise standards, policies, and architectural plans
- Documents current (“as-is”) and future-state (“to-be”) architectures; assesses gaps and develops transition strategies; provides practical guidance to overcome gaps and deliver expected business outcomes
- Oversees the maintenance of OSU IT architectural standards and ensures architectural artifacts support governance, decision-making, and project delivery
- Partners with IT governance and portfolio management functions to integrate enterprise architecture practices into planning and delivery workflows; documents architectural decisions, risks, and exceptions
- Collaborates with agile teams to ensure consistency with the enterprise architecture and to leverage shared technologies, tools, and processes that impact speed to value and time to market
Solution Architecture & Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborates with projects, products, and portfolio teams to design solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards; provides expert guidance on solution design, technology selection, and architectural tradeoffs
- Translates business requirements into scalable, secure, and integrated technical solutions; ensures alignment with security, data, integration, and compliance requirements across the enterprise
- Builds and maintains effective partnerships across IT domains and university business units; translates complex technical concepts into clear and actionable guidance for diverse audiences
- Identifies potential digital threats and emerging technology trends applicable to the OSU IT ecosystem; details competitive considerations and assesses applicability to OSU’s strategic direction
- Drives adoption of enterprise architecture standards and practices across the institution; supports teams in operationalizing architectural guidance
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a closely related field; equivalent education and/or experience may be substituted
Eight or more years of progressively responsible experience in enterprise architecture, IT strategy, or related technical disciplines, Demonstrated experience translating complex business requirements into scalable, secure, and integrated enterprise technology solutions
Demonstrated ability to develop and steward enterprise architecture artifacts, governance frameworks, and IT standards recommendations based on EA best practices
Expert knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, methodologies, and frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, Zachman, or equivalent)
Exceptional communication skills with demonstrated ability to present complex architectural concepts clearly to executive, technical, and non-technical audiences
Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing professional-level staff in a technical environment; demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams
Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated experience leading complex, institution-wide architecture initiatives and driving business outcomes through technology strategy
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred Qualifications:
TOGAF certification or equivalent enterprise architecture framework certification (e.g., FEAF, Zachman)
Experience leading enterprise architecture governance bodies such as an Architecture Review Board or similar oversight function
Experience with cloud-based architectures and modern application patterns (e.g., APIs, SaaS, microservices)
Deep expertise with cloud-based architectures, integration patterns, and modern application delivery models (e.g., APIs, SaaS, microservices, hybrid cloud)
Experience supporting IT portfolio, program management, or large-scale institutional technology initiatives (e.g., AMP, ERP implementations)
Experience facilitating cross-functional stakeholder engagement
Working Conditions/Schedule:
ScheduleThis position will work a typical Monday – Friday schedule and will be based on the Corvallis campus.
This position may at times require work outside of normal business hours and/or weekends.
Modality
Hybrid: This position is designated as hybrid, working both on-site and remotely. The exact amount of on-site and remote work and schedule will be discussed with the supervisor. Hybrid work is dependent on business needs.
