The Process Controls Engineer serves as the lead automation engineer for batching operations and is responsible for the architecture, design, programming, and long-term support of FactoryTalk Batch and related control systems. This role focuses on developing and optimizing batch processes that support wet wipe manufacturing while ensuring system reliability, regulatory and safety compliance, and strong operational performance. The engineer will act as a subject matter expert in batch automation, providing technical leadership across manufacturing facilities and driving continuous improvements in process consistency and overall equipment effectiveness.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of ISA-88 compliant FactoryTalk Batch systems that align with enterprise standards.
• Translate process requirements, P&IDs, formulas, process narratives, and user requirements into scalable batch recipes and robust automation strategies.
• Architect and optimize chemical blending, compounding, dosing, transfer, and thermal process control systems to support wet wipe manufacturing operations.
• Develop, maintain, and govern batch recipes, procedural models, formula management processes, and exception handling strategies.
• Lead the design and standardization of batch-integrated CIP/SIP cleaning and sanitizing systems.
• Define batch execution standards including interlocks, permissives, alarms, event handling, and batch record requirements.
• Ensure batch traceability, historization, compliance, and integration with Quality systems and related reporting tools.
• Integrate FactoryTalk Batch platforms with PLCs, HMIs, historian systems, and MES platforms to enable seamless data and process flow.
• Establish programming standards, reusable code libraries, and lifecycle management practices for automation systems.
• Lead troubleshooting activities, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions for complex automation and batch control issues.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for batch systems and drive improvements in process consistency and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
• Lead or support capital projects through all phases including design, commissioning, startup, and stabilization.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to engineering and operations teams across manufacturing facilities.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline preferred, with 12+ years of relevant industry experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Expert-level experience with FactoryTalk Batch or comparable batch automation platforms.
• Strong background in process controls and industrial automation, particularly in batch operations.
• Expertise with Rockwell Automation PLCs, including ControlLogix and CompactLogix.
• Proficiency with FactoryTalk View and ISA-88 standards for batch control and procedural models.
• Solid background in chemical process automation, including batching, dosing, mixing, and transfer systems.
• Direct experience implementing or supporting CIP/SIP cleaning and sanitizing control systems.
• Experience working with historian and reporting platforms, including database implementation for process data.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, loop sheets, and process narratives.
• Knowledge of OSHA requirements and industrial safety practices.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to support multiple projects concurrently and manage competing priorities effectively.
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 20–30% annually, including domestic and international travel.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in consumer products, chemicals, food, or other regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
• Experience with MES platforms and their integration with batch and automation systems preferred.
• Familiarity with AssetCentre or equivalent version control and configuration management tools preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple manufacturing sites.
• Proven capability to drive improvements in process consistency and OEE through automation and controls optimization.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in a remote work environment, providing flexibility in day-to-day location. The position requires 20–30% travel annually, including domestic and international trips to manufacturing facilities and project sites for design reviews, commissioning, startup, and ongoing support. Work involves extensive use of industrial automation technologies such as Rockwell Automation PLCs, FactoryTalk Batch, FactoryTalk View, historian platforms, MES systems, and related control and reporting tools. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams in engineering, operations, and quality, and is expected to follow established industrial safety practices and OSHA requirements while on-site.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Morristown, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $160000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
