ABOUT METRC
Metrc is the most trusted and experienced provider of cannabis regulatory systems in the United States and is growing extremely rapidly to expand globally. We provide a solution that combines advanced software, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, a dedicated customer-support team, and a secure database to track and trace cannabis from growth, harvest, and processing to testing, transport, and sale. As a Quality Engineer, you will have the opportunity to thrive in a fast-moving, fluid environment, and be passionate about implementing change, great processes and procedures in a commercial setting at a fast-growing technology company.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Metrc is seeking an experienced Quality Engineer to own software quality and technical workflow validation across our platform and integrated product ecosystem. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that Metrc’s software — including its core track-and-trace platform, APIs, and third-party integrations — performs reliably, accurately, and in accordance with both functional requirements and regulatory obligations.
This is a technically substantive role that goes beyond functional UI testing. You will work across system boundaries, validate complex data flows, and troubleshoot issues that span software configurations, API behavior, integration handoffs, and end-to-end business workflows. The right candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable with technical complexity, and experienced working in SaaS environments where quality failures carry real-world consequences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Core duties and responsibilities include the following.
Software Testing & Validation
- Design, develop, and execute comprehensive test plans and test cases for new features, platform updates, and integration changes across Metrc’s software product suite.
- Perform functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end workflow testing, ensuring coverage across user-facing features and underlying technical behaviors.
- Validate API behavior — including request/response accuracy, error handling, edge cases, and data integrity — using tools such as Postman or comparable platforms.
- Test complex multi-step workflows that span Metrc’s platform and third-party integrations, including POS systems, ERP platforms, and state regulatory reporting interfaces.
- Contribute to test automation strategies and, where applicable, develop or maintain automated test scripts to improve coverage and efficiency over time.
Troubleshooting & Defect Management
- Investigate and reproduce software defects reported through internal QA, customer escalations, or cross-functional team channels, providing clear and thorough documentation of findings.
- Conduct root cause analysis on software failures, distinguishing between application bugs, configuration issues, data problems, and integration faults.
- Manage the full defect lifecycle in Jira, including logging, prioritization, retesting, and closure, ensuring defect records are accurate and actionable for engineering teams.
- Collaborate with Engineering to validate bug fixes and confirm that resolutions meet acceptance criteria before release.
- Identify patterns across reported issues that may indicate systemic problems, and surface those findings proactively to QA and Product leadership.
Workflow & Integration QA
- Validate technical workflows end-to-end across integrated systems, ensuring that data flows correctly between Metrc’s platform and connected third-party applications.
- Test configuration-driven behaviors — such as state-specific compliance rules, licensee settings, and feature flags — to confirm that software behaves as intended across varied customer environments.
- Evaluate the impact of platform changes on downstream integrations and flag risks to release readiness when workflow-level impacts are identified.
- Collaborate with the Configuration Specialist to validate customer-specific platform setups, helping to identify and resolve QA issues that surface during onboarding or go-live activities.
Release Readiness & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Participate in release readiness reviews, providing a documented QA readiness assessment based on acceptance criteria and test completion standards as input into cross-functional release decisions.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and the Release Manager to communicate test status, outstanding defects, and risk assessments ahead of release milestones.
- Contribute to the definition of acceptance criteria for new features and user stories, ensuring testability is considered during the planning and design process.
- Support the development of QA standards and release readiness criteria in partnership with the Head of Quality.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain thorough, well-organized QA documentation in Confluence and Jira, including test plans, test cases, execution results, and defect records.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of QA processes, testing frameworks, and standards as the quality function matures.
- Participate in post-release retrospectives and help translate findings into actionable improvements to test coverage or process.
- Stay current with software QA methodologies, tooling, and best practices, applying relevant advances to improve Metrc’s quality outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Required
- 4+ years of experience in software QA engineering within a SaaS or software product environment.
- Demonstrated experience testing APIs and validating complex technical workflows across integrated systems.
- Proficiency with API testing tools such as Postman, Insomnia, or equivalent, with the ability to construct, execute, and evaluate API test cases independently.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and QA’s role within sprint-based delivery models.
- Advanced proficiency with Jira for defect management, test tracking, and reporting; experience with Confluence for documentation.
- Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a structured approach to root cause analysis across multi-system environments.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear defect reports, test documentation, and QA status summaries for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working in regulated, compliance-driven, or government-adjacent industries where software accuracy and data integrity carry significant consequence.
Preferred
- Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g. Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, or similar) and practical involvement in building or maintaining automated test suites.
- Familiarity with SQL or comparable query tools for validating data integrity and tracing data flows across system boundaries.
- Background in testing configuration-driven or multi-tenant SaaS platforms where customer-specific rules and settings materially affect software behavior.
- Experience validating integrations with third-party platforms such as POS systems, ERP solutions, or state regulatory reporting interfaces.
- Knowledge of cannabis technology, track-and-trace compliance requirements, or state regulatory software environments.
- ISTQB certification or equivalent formal QA training is a plus.
