Empower the Next Generation to End Factory Farming

What would it mean to dedicate your time, talent, and energy to creating a more just and sustainable food system?

New Roots Institute is a growing nonprofit dedicated to ending factory farming by empowering the next generation of advocates. Our fellowship programs train students to lead advocacy campaigns that create structural and behavioral change in their communities.

We’re seeking a motivated and mission-driven Program Coordinator to join our team and help us deepen our impact.

Is New Roots Institute the right place for you? Here’s what you should know:

  • Ending factory farming is not merely our employment. We prioritize our lives around it and are looking for people who bring that same commitment, along with the self-awareness and discipline to sustain it.

  • We continuously question our own biases and assumptions and adapt when we recognize we’re wrong. We’re looking for people who can see their ego and know how to put it aside to achieve shared goals.

  • We're results-oriented, strive for excellence, and are looking for people who can say they never miss deadlines.

  • Giving and receiving honest and direct feedback is foundational to our culture and a performance requirement for all of us. We're looking for people who are eager to use constructive feedback to grow and help others to grow, both personally and professionally.

  • Because we work remotely, proactive communication and quick responses are key to building trust and working effectively together. We’re looking for people who excel at keeping everyone updated. If you don’t always respond within a few hours, New Roots won’t be the place for you.

  • We genuinely enjoy working together and look for ways to have fun, despite the tragic nature of what we are up against.

How You’ll Make an Impact

As Program Coordinator, you'll play an essential role in creating well-organized, responsive, and consistent experiences for applicants, program participants, and alumni. You'll support the coordination of the systems and recurring processes that keep our programs moving, from admissions and live programming to participant follow-up, data management, and annual program setup.

  • Coordinate the systems and behind-the-scenes details that keep Leadership Academy and Academic Year Fellowship sessions running smoothly, including setting up virtual events and links, monitoring live sessions, and ensuring programming starts on time and runs cleanly for fellows.

  • Keep fellows on track throughout the program by maintaining accurate participation records, following up on missed sessions and assignments, monitoring onboarding requirements, responding to routine questions, and completing end-of-program processes.

  • Support the execution of a timely and well-organized admissions experience by processing applications, monitoring the admissions inbox, scheduling interviews and welcome calls, conducting a share of those calls, and maintaining accurate applicant records, particularly during high-volume periods.

  • Maintain accurate data about fellow and alumni engagement, achievements, campaigns, and career outcomes by conducting regular reviews, gathering missing information, and entering updates into the systems that support organizational learning, reporting, and grant applications.

  • Set up, maintain, and improve the systems and materials needed for consistent program delivery, including creating recurring task structures, managing the annual duplication and rollover of program resources, and formatting decks and documents so they are clear, polished, and ready to use.

  • Coordinate effectively across programs teams, shifting between priorities as the program calendar changes and communicating clearly about progress, capacity, and competing needs.

  • Take ownership of projects and recurring processes, exercising sound judgment about when to move work forward independently, when to ask for guidance, and when a process could be simplified or automated.

What We’re Looking For

Required Skills & Experience

  • At least one year of work experience, including part-time jobs and internships, that involved recurring administrative, coordination, or operations work, with a track record of keeping that work on schedule.

  • If you completed the New Roots Institute Academic Year Fellowship, you're welcome to apply whether or not you meet the experience requirement above.

  • Motivated to build a long-term career in the movement to end factory farming, and eager to take on more responsibility as you grow.

  • Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented, comfortable running many small recurring tasks on a schedule, and quick to notice when something has not been completed.

  • Persistent and diplomatic in following up. A part of this role is asking people for information they have not sent you yet, more than once, without being ignored and without becoming a nuisance.

  • A clear, warm writer, able to communicate with fellows in a consistent voice and to write plainly and briefly to staff and external contacts.

  • Sound judgment about what to escalate. You will often be the first person a fellow contacts, and knowing which questions you answer and which need to be redirected matters more than knowing every answer yourself.

  • Confident with spreadsheets and quick to learn new platforms. We use Zoom, Google Workspace, Asana, Airtable, and Circle daily. Prior experience with any of these is a plus, not a requirement.

  • Eager to learn about and use AI tools thoughtfully and strategically to work more efficiently and produce higher-quality work.

Other Requirements

  • Shared vegan and anti-speciesist values. No one on our team consumes animals or animal products or believes that non-human animals can ethically be treated as resources for human use.

  • Ability to commit to two annual in-person gatherings: the team retreat, which typically takes place during the first full week of June, and the New Roots Summit, anticipated around the first week of August beginning in 2027.

  • Flexible availability to support live programming. Academic Year Fellowship sessions run in the evening, the summer Leadership Academy runs on weekday mornings (in Pacific Time), and this role needs to move with the program calendar as schedules change from term to term.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, remote position with a salary of $62,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, and unlimited PTO.

Please note, we have a no-negotiation salary policy to ensure transparency and equity across the team.
