AstoncarterJob Title: Project Accountant Job Description The Project Accountant supports the full lifecycle of client projects, partnering closely with project managers from proposal through closeout to ensure accurate billing, financial reporting, and compliance with accounting standards. This role sets up and maintains projects in the project accounting system, prepares and reviews invoices, manages project-related receivables and collections, and performs ongoing financial reviews to monitor project performance. Responsibilities Collaborate with project managers on all accounting aspects of projects from initial proposal through final closeout. Validate that project proposals, purchase orders, and internal project setup documents are complete, accurate, and properly authorized. Set up and maintain client projects within the project accounting system to ensure accurate billing and financial reporting. Understand and apply different billing structures, including cost-plus, cost-plus-to-a-maximum, and lump-sum arrangements, and ensure invoices are presented correctly to clients. Prepare, review, and submit client invoices in a timely and accurate manner, aligning with contract terms and project milestones. Review and approve project-related vendor purchase orders and invoices, ensuring proper coding and alignment with project budgets. Conduct frequent project financial reviews, including validating estimated cost-to-complete calculations, month-end over/under work-in-progress (WIP), and project variances. Manage and reconcile multi-company project postings for revenue and expenses to ensure proper allocation and reporting. Oversee project accounts receivable and collections, including researching and resolving cash receipt discrepancies. Apply knowledge of U.S. sales tax laws as they relate to professional services and project materials sold, ensuring compliance in billing and reporting. Close out projects upon completion, confirming that all billable work has been invoiced and outstanding commitments have been resolved. Essential Skills At least 2 years of project accounting experience. At least 4 years of overall accounting experience. Hands-on experience with project accounting processes from setup through closeout. Strong billing experience, including cost-plus, cost-plus-to-a-maximum, and lump-sum billing structures. Ability to review and approve project-related vendor purchase orders and invoices. Experience managing accounts receivable and collections, including resolving cash receipt discrepancies. Working knowledge of U.S. sales tax laws as they pertain to professional services and project materials. Proficiency in using project accounting systems to set up projects, process invoices, and generate financial reports. Attention to detail and accuracy in financial documentation and reporting. Strong analytical skills to validate cost-to-complete estimates, WIP balances, and project variances. Ability to collaborate effectively with project managers and cross-functional teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with lien waivers and related documentation in a project environment. Familiarity with multi-company project postings for revenue and expenses. Comfort working with multiple projects simultaneously and prioritizing deadlines. Strong communication skills for explaining billing details and resolving client or vendor questions. Organizational skills to manage project documentation and maintain clear audit trails. Work Environment The role begins with an in-office training period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks to ensure thorough onboarding and familiarity with systems and processes. After training, the position transitions to a primarily remote work arrangement, with most team members choosing to come into the office 1 to 2 times per quarter. Team members are welcome to work from the office more frequently if they prefer. The office environment in Eden Prairie is described as very pleasant and professional, providing a comfortable setting for collaboration and focused work. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hopkins, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $38.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
